US Grade 7 - 10
In this one-time class students will learn about found poetry and will create their own. We will investigate forms such as the cut-up, black-out, and golden shovel. We will use games, prompts, and both collaborative and individual exercises to write found poetry. By the end of the class, learners will have a better understanding of found poems and how to create them, and will have written several poems. Learners will receive additional writing prompts at the end of class so they can continue to experiment with writing found poems. Learners will need to bring to class paper, scissors, glue or tape, a dark marker (Sharpies work great) and old magazines/newspapers/books/junk mail they can write on and cut up.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit more about me as an educator! I have been teaching students of all ages from little kiddos to middle school, high school, and adult learners for over 20 years in various capacities. I have a BA in English from Western Washington University, a Master in Teaching from Evergreen State College, and a Master in Transformative Language Arts from Goddard College. I've taught in juvenile detention centers and prisons, in traditional schools, in online programs, at community colleges, in daycares, and even as a homeschooling mom! I've also worked as a director for several different educational programs.
I believe strongly in the transformative power of language and its ability to create change both within us as individuals as well as within our communities and society. I love when I witness a student find just the right words to express how they feel or come alive as they read a poem to a class! In my teaching I encourage students to find their own voices and use those voices to write about what matters most to them. I believe in meeting students where they are at and developing learning from their existing passions. I think everybody has the ability to be a writer, even if they don't know it yet!
I look forward to working with you and engaging in fun and thought-provoking writing assignments!
