Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
This course is comprised of weeks 9-12 of a one-semester (16-week) writing course appropriate for ages 8-13.

In this video-based class, students can expect to have fun while learning how to elevate their writing style through grammatical and stylistic devices. Each individual class will focus on a specific aspect of writing. Each assignment will include a checklist that builds over time, and all submitted assignments receive an evaluation with detailed feedback.

All classes use a pre-recorded instructor video of 15-25 minutes. Students should pause the video to complete all activities. At the end, students will have a longer activity to complete and submit for feedback. In addition to the video, each week the instructor will post worksheets that review the class material, classwork and homework assignments.

Learning Goals

Students will continue to build their writing skills through weekly assessments. They will have a checklist with each assignment that they can use to self-evaluate prior to turning in the assignment.

Specifically, students will examine:
*the parts of speech
*the use of literary devices
*verb tenses
*certain poems
*vocabulary
*editing/grammar

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Lesson 9
In Lesson 9, we continue our examination of parts of speech and add in the correct usage of dialogue, which often has tricky punctuation! Students should have mastered the ideas of dependent and independent clauses, as well as the use of subordinate conjunctions and the use of prepositional phrases and adverbs as sentence openers. The assignment this week is a narrative that begins with “I almost made that jump!” Students must demonstrate active verbs and all other requirements in the checklist.
Lesson 2:
Lesson 10
In Lesson 10, students will begin to add “dress up” devices to their work. The first such device is alliteration, and students will examine Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” for its masterful use of alliteration. A secondary discussion is about diction, which is how something is said. Students will practice using formal and informal diction and must demonstrate this in their assignment.
Lesson 3:
Lesson 11
In Lesson 11, students circle back to the concept of adverbs and examine adverbs that don’t end in -ly. These are adverbs that show how, when, where, how often, and to what extent. We will also continue perfecting dialogue and its punctuation.

For an assignment, students will compose a letter to their future selves.
Lesson 4:
Lesson 12
This lesson brings in another form of sentence openers: participial openers. Students will also review prepositions, dialogue, and description. This week is notable for the fact that students now have TEN items in their checklist that they must display in their assignment! They must also avoid these words: all to be verbs, go/goes/come/came/went.

For the assignment, they must retell a fairytale from another character’s point-of-view.

My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities.

On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
