Class Experience

Unlock Your Word Power!

Want to ace standardized tests, excel in college, and impress teachers with your writing? A strong vocabulary is the key, and there's no better time to start building it than now! In this dynamic, ongoing weekly class, students will master 10 powerful words per session, expanding their linguistic toolbox while having fun along the way.

This is the same material as the weekly Vocabulary Workshop but limits the class to 8 students.

Each session dives deep into SAT/ACT-level words, exploring their etymology, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, and real-world usage. Students will also gain access to Quizlet, an interactive platform with flashcards and games, to reinforce their learning outside of class.

No two weeks are the same—each class features a fresh set of words, and students can join any session or skip as needed. Whether you attend a few weeks or the whole course, your vocabulary will keep growing!

Class Flow:

We start with a fun warm-up using one of the week’s featured words. After pronouncing the word (and students are encouraged to try pronouncing it!), we uncover the word’s definition and work through engaging visuals and scenarios to bring each word to life.

In the second part of class, affectionately dubbed The Regurgitation Station, students "regurgitate" what they’ve learned by typing the words back into chat when prompted. This playful activity helps reinforce word associations as we review meanings, synonyms, antonyms, and roots.

We wrap up with a creative challenge! Students craft sentences using one or more vocabulary words based on a fun image prompt, making sure the words really stick in their minds.

Sample Word Set: verbose, urbane, revere, preclude, malevolence, gregarious, equivocal, enumerate, bias, aromatic

Ready to flex your word muscles? Let’s start building a vocabulary that sets you up for success!

Bachelor's Degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities. For this class in particular, I bring my innate love of vocabulary and big, beautiful words!

On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
