Class Experience

US Grade 10 - 12
The SAT is a huge test, and many students aren’t sure what they should be doing to get ready for it. This class is designed to get them started and build their confidence. Students are encouraged to bring all their test-related questions such as…

- When should I take the test?
- Where do I register?
- How much should I study?
…and their content-related questions like…
- How do you use a semicolon?
- What is the definition of flabbergasted?
- How can I tell the difference between the main topic and a detail?

There have been a lot of changes in the test-taking industry over the past few years, including the movement toward test-optional admissions policies and the switch to a digital SAT. As a result, students may hear confusing, conflicting, and incorrect information from their teachers, parents, and peers. One goal of this class is to ensure that all learners have access to a caring test-prep professional who will listen to their questions and give reliable answers and encouragement.

The second goal of this class, and the one that will take the majority of class time, is to introduce students to the format, question types, pacing, and topics on the reading and writing portion of the SAT. In every class, we will look at several SAT questions, and analyze them together. The teacher will also give a mini-lesson on a topic that is covered by the SAT, including…
-	Vocabulary building
-	Punctuation Rules
-	Sentence structure
-	Finding the main idea or main purpose of a passage
-	Determining the function of a sentence
-	Selecting the appropriate data from a chart or graph
-	Rhetorical synthesis
-	Supporting or weakening a claim
-	Cross-text connections
-	And more!

These topics will not be taught sequentially, so students can join the class at any time and stay for as many weeks as they need. There will be no required homework for this class, but the teacher will provide the students with a practice SAT each month to try on their own.
