Homework
2-4 hours per week. There is a set of practice problems at the end of each lesson for students to complete. These are accompanied by a video explanation for each question, so students can watch the videos for just the questions they missed or are curious about.
Assessment
This class does not offer formal assessments, but students are shown how to take several practice tests on the CollegeBoard's free BlueBook app. This excellent resource will provide students with accurate scores and help them monitor their progress in a data-driven way.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Learn to SHRED THE SAT with this engaging and complete math class for the digital SAT.  This course keeps things light with a fun ski theme, but it will set you up for a serious score improvement.  

SHRED THE SAT is designed to 
- review all the foundational math topics covered on the SAT
- discuss the best strategies for taking a multiple-choice test in a digital environment
- work through examples at all difficulty levels
- provide plenty of practice problems so students can build their experience and confidence
- work in a convenient self-paced format, so each student can work under their own timeline.

Each lesson contains multiple videos, each about 5-15 minutes long, created by a SAT tutor with more than 20 years experience.  The videos contain multiple practice problems, so students cannot watch them passively.  There is written summary of each video posted in the classroom, along with a frequent fun and encouraging messages.  The end of each lesson contains a set of practice problems with video explanations available for every question for students to watch as needed.

Students who complete the full course as intended should expect to spend 1.5-2 hours on each of the 13 lessons.  The full course should take 6-13 weeks, depending on how many lessons per week the student choses to complete.  They will need a notebook, pencil, and calculator to take notes and work through practice problems.  

Since this is a self-paced class, there will be no live meetings.  However, every lesson gives an opportunity for the student to ask questions of the teacher and receive feedback and encouragement.  The teacher will be available to respond on Tuesdays through Saturdays, except for holidays.  Once the student completes the full course, they will get a certificate of completion to help them celebrate their accomplishment.

Learning Goals

Students should see a significant increase in their scores on the math section of the SAT after taking this class.  While all students are different, the average student can expect to see their score go up by 50-100 points.  Students should also feel more comfortable with the testing situation and more confident in their abilities.

Syllabus

13 Lessons
over 13 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Intro to SAT Math
 In this lesson you will learn how the SAT is formatted, what topics it covers, and how you will be scored.  You will also get started right away with several practice problems. 
Lesson 2:
Using Desmos
 In this lesson you will learn when and how to use the built in desmos graphing calculator.  Mastering this powerful tool is the most effective way to raise your score.  You will complete two drills where you will use desmos to answer every question. 
5 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages
 In this lesson you get a quick overview of how to work with fractions, decimals, and percentages, and you will complete several practice problems on your own. 
Lesson 4:
Rates, Ratios, and Proportions
 In this lesson you get an overview of how the SAT crafts questions on the topics of rates, ratios, and proportions.  There will be a special focus on unit conversions, which are a common topic on the test.  You will also have the opportunity to complete several practice problems.

This class is most effective for students who have completed Algebra 1 and have at least started Algebra 2.

Passionate about helping her students achieve their college dreams by being their coach and cheerleader as they prep for the SAT and ACT, Heather Krey is an experienced instructor with teaching certificates in math, physics, chemistry, and English. She knows the best tips and strategies for these tests – and she also understands that students need encouragement and practice to do their best. With dual bachelor's degrees in industrial engineering and psychology from Lehigh University, she also holds masters of education degrees in mathematics from DeSales University and in teaching from Kutztown University. Heather lives in Allentown, PA, with her husband and three children.

Mrs. Solomon tutors all sections of both tests and appreciates students with all kinds of goals, abilities, and temperaments. She loves the challenge of new students and does everything she can to stay up to date on the ever-evolving standardized tests.  Mrs. Solomon currently teaches our ACT classes and is also available for private tutoring sessions for ACT, SAT, and academic English. When Mrs. Solomon’s not tutoring, she’s spending time with family, especially her daughter Ellen Fay, who was born in 2018, and her great dane, Opal.

Mrs. Miller has a total of 9 years teaching high school. She has taught a variety of science courses including Chemistry, Physical Science, and Environmental Science. While teaching she enjoyed her time coaching Science Olympiad and bringing her team to the State Championships! She spends most of her time taking care of her two daughters, experimentally cooking, and playing board games with her friends. Rebecca is available for private tutoring for chemistry.
