Remarkable Women Composers: A Musical History

In this four-week class students will learn about celebrated women composers and musicians from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by learning about their lives and times, the challenges they faced as female musicians and composers, and by listening to and learning about their compositions and life's works. Stories from the composers’ childhoods to the successes and hardships of their careers and personal lives will be shared, and examples of their work will be listened to together. The...
Students will be introduced to composers who have often been overlooked throughout history, but who were as accomplished and celebrated as their male contemporaries during their lifetimes. Students will have the chance to hear compositions by each of the composers, and to learn exciting details about their lives. Each class meeting will focus on a different composer or composers, while additional significant musicians of their time will also be mentioned. Aurore Sibley is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, and longtime piano teacher with a Master’s degree in Education. She has been involved in music teaching and performing in a variety of settings and capacities throughout the past several decades.
Homework Offered
Students will be encouraged to further research the composers presented and to listen to additional pieces of music between class meetings. During the final few weeks of the class, each student may choose a composer about whom to research and write a short creative piece to share during the final meeting.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

The ways in which women and girls have historically been excluded from opportunities to pursue music performance and composition as a career will be discussed.
The instructor has researched the various composers from cataloged sources such as biographies and published letters, as well as internet sources, recordings of their music, and literature about the times in which they lived.
