Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
No conflict in history was more of a woman's war than the Civil War. Although the Union and Confederate armies had contrasting views, women from both sides stepped forward as defenders of their respective causes. Emotions, energies, and talents they never realized they possessed were unleashed. Here was a crusade in which they were needed and one in which they enthusiastically participated.

In this five-week course, we will explore the crucial roles women played during the Civil War. Students will hear compelling stories of women serving as nurses, spies, soldiers, and vivandières (women who followed the army to provide support for the troops). We will delve into the critical contributions of free and enslaved Black women during the Civil War, highlighting their resilience and bravery. Additionally, we will examine the aftermath of the war and its impact on women’s lives.

The class will be interactive, featuring PowerPoint presentations, engaging videos, and active student participation. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted roles women played during this pivotal period in American history.
