US Grade 4 - 7
There was probably no conflict in history, which was more of a woman's war than that of the Civil War. Although the union and confederate armies had contrasting views, women step forward as defenders of their respective causes. Emotions, energies, and talents that even they did not realize they possessed were unleashed. Here was a crusade in which they were needed and one in which they enthusiastically participated. In this five-week course, we will discuss the importance of women's role...
Students will learn that, although women were not allowed to join the Confederate or Union armies during the Civil War, they did more than sit at home worrying about their husbands and sons. Instead, they will learn that this period was when women became nurses, soldiers, spies and how this tragic event helped the women's rights movement.
I have taught numerous classes on the Civil War, as well as oppressed and marginalized people both on Outschool and elsewhere. Whether black or white, Northern or Southern, rich or poor, women confronted daunting obstacles during the Civil War, and I will handle these topics in an age-appropriate manner. If there are any concerns or questions, please contact me, and I will respond as soon as possible.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
When talking about a tragic event like the Civil War, some sensitive questions may arise. These questions may come up in class, or they may come up in your home. As with all my classes, I will answer these questions at an age-appropriate level. However, if they come up in your home and you have any concerns or questions, I am always here to help.
I have studied the Civil War for many years and have taken many college courses on the subject. For this class, I will be using that information, the Library of Congress website, as well as the following books (students do not need to purchase): 1) Courageous Women of the Civil War: Soldiers, Spies, Medics, and More 2) Women of the Blue and Gray 3) They Fought Like Demons: Women Soldiers in the American Civil War 4) Behind the Rifle: Women Soldiers in Civil War Mississippi Women Soldiers in Civil War Mississippi 5) Women in the Civil War 6) A Separate Battle: Women and the Civil War
Looking back on my early years of learning, what stands out most in my memories are the subjects I found joy in, the teachers who made learning a delightful experience, and the freedom to explore topics that fascinated me. These are the very...
