In this ongoing class, beginning readers will be introduced to a new word family each week. We will read a short story and have the students identify words that match our day’s featured word family. We will then practice letter sounds and start sounding out words in the word family. During class, students will use on-screen pictures, games, and printouts to determine which sounds belong in the family and which ones don’t. The printouts will help the students practice their writing and blending skills. If you don’t have a printer, written work can be done on plain paper. This class is appropriate for emergent readers just starting to be interested in reading and children that have developed some basic letter recognition and beginning reading skills. Together we will have fun and take the next step to become confident readers!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to blend, write, and read consonant-vowel-consonant words.

Hello! My name is Calliope, and I live in sunny, Southern California with my husband, son, daughter and the amazing Kasey Doodle dog. I have 18 years of teaching experience in private schools, homeschooling my two children and teaching English to children in China, Japan and Mongolia. I also have a Bachelor’s degree from U.C.L.A. in History and Education.
I would love to teach your child about all the “ins-and-outs” of the English language and reading skills.
I believe in encouraging as much student output as possible during our classes. Children will learn best when they feel involved and every child in my classroom is important and greatly valued. I want children to see that what they are learning is relevant to their lives and taught in a genuine and caring manner.
I promise any student of mine will leave my class with a smile on their face and excitement about the content they just learned. I can’t wait to see you in the classroom!
