Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
This private tutoring class is designed to support struggling readers, including those with dyslexia, using a structured, individualized approach based on Orton-Gillingham methods and the Science of Reading.

During our first session, we’ll focus on building a trusting and comfortable relationship. I’ll also conduct a brief informal assessment to identify your child’s current reading level and areas of need. Parents are welcome (and encouraged!) to share concerns or specific goals for their child’s reading journey.

Each session will be tailored to your child’s unique strengths, challenges, and interests. Lessons are designed to build foundational reading and spelling skills, support vocabulary development, and strengthen reading comprehension. Some possible areas of focus include:

Short and long vowels
CVC word blending
Digraphs and vowel teams
Diphthongs and syllable types
Prefixes, suffixes, and morphology
Decoding strategies and fluency
Vocabulary and comprehension skills

While the pace and content will be individualized, every lesson includes explicit instruction, multi-sensory activities, and meaningful reading practice. I believe students need to not only read the words—but also understand them. We will work on both.

You’ll receive regular updates on your child’s progress, along with optional resources for practice at home. These are never assigned as homework—just extra tools if you want them.

As both a certified reading specialist and a parent of a child with dyslexia, I understand the academic and emotional challenges that can come with learning to read. My goal is to help each student build skill and confidence—while rediscovering the joy of reading.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their ability to decode words and comprehend text.

Hello! My name is Katie and I can't wait to see you in one of my classes!

I received my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Florida and my Masters of Education degree in Reading Education from the University of Central Florida. I spent 9.5 years working in the public school system. I've taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. I also spent 3 years as a reading specialist. As a reading specialist, I worked with teachers to improve and innovate their instruction. I also worked with students in all grades (K-5) to intervene or enrich their reading instruction.

I'm currently staying home to homeschool my dyslexic son. I have completed 60 hours of Orton Gillingham training and enjoy incorporating strategies based on the science of reading into my lessons.

I believe all students can learn and have fun in the process! Reading is my passion, so most of my classes are centered around reading skills. Using my high energy and quick ability to adapt to students needs, I strive to ensure each student is fully engaged and enjoying each lesson. Students learn best with a variety of modalities. My lessons will incorporate a mixture of various teaching methods: powerpoints, discussions, videos, worksheets, games, and drawings.

I live in Orlando, Florida. I enjoy spending time at the beach and going to Disney with my family! In my free time, I can be found running around the neighborhood or curling up with a good book.
