Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 6
This course will be individualized to fit your student's needs. The first session will be focused on getting to know the student and building a trusting and comfortable relationship. A brief assessment will be given to determine the student's level and an area of focus. Parents are also welcome to share their concern and a specific area they want to be addressed.

Orton Gillingham methods will be used to help dyslexic students or students who needed more intensive help with phonics and spelling.

In the following sessions I will provide lessons that gradually build on the student's level. We will practice decoding words and learn new strategies to read unknown words in a text. There will be a large focus on not only reading new words, but being able to determine the meaning of the words. To be a successful reader, students must be able to read words AND understand meaning. We will learn and practice both in this class. Possible lesson topics include, but are not limited to: basic vowel sounds, CVS word blending, digraphs, vowel teams, diphthongs, types of syllables, prefixes, and suffixes. Every lesson will include vocabulary practice and comprehension strategies.

Parents will be updated frequently with their child's progress and will occasionally be provided resources to use outside of class. This is not homework, but simply additional practice.

I strongly believe EVERY child can learn to read and ENJOY reading. This class will not only help your child become a better reader, but will increase their confidence when it comes to reading. Each class will be tailored to the student's interest. Reading passages, activities, and instructional strategies will be differentiated to best fit your child's style of learning and interests.

As a mother of a son with dyslexia, I've seen first hand how emotional learning to read can be. My hope is to bring more fun back in reading and ensure each child knows he/she can be successful and WILL be successful. In the past year, I have obtained my 60 hours of training in Orton Gillingham. Orton Gillingham is a powerful and scientifically proven approach to reading. All of my lessons will be structured around OG instructional practices.

Hello! My name is Katie and I can't wait to see you in one of my classes!

I received my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Florida and my Masters of Education degree in Reading Education from the University of Central Florida. I spent 9.5 years working in the public school system. I've taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. I also spent 3 years as a reading specialist. As a reading specialist, I worked with teachers to improve and innovate their instruction. I also worked with students in all grades (K-5) to intervene or enrich their reading instruction.

I'm currently staying home to homeschool my dyslexic son. I have completed 60 hours of Orton Gillingham training and enjoy incorporating strategies based on the science of reading into my lessons.

I believe all students can learn and have fun in the process! Reading is my passion, so most of my classes are centered around reading skills. Using my high energy and quick ability to adapt to students needs, I strive to ensure each student is fully engaged and enjoying each lesson. Students learn best with a variety of modalities. My lessons will incorporate a mixture of various teaching methods: powerpoints, discussions, videos, worksheets, games, and drawings.

I live in Orlando, Florida. I enjoy spending time at the beach and going to Disney with my family! In my free time, I can be found running around the neighborhood or curling up with a good book.
