Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
While research shows that all students learn best through multi-sensory instruction, it is especially helpful for students with dyslexia. By using their five senses to create, discuss, and hear sounds, students will be able to engrave various phonics patterns into memory. In addition to my masters degree in reading education, I also have obtained my 60 hours of training in Orton Gillingham training. My goal is to not only help students become better readers, but to have fun and enjoy the process too!

Please note that words used in each lesson will be based on a 2nd to 4th grade reading level. This class will focus heavily on syllable division the last three weeks. If your child is reading at a lower grade level and struggling with spelling, I suggest starting with level one flex class. You can find it at bit.ly/FlexPhonicsLevel1

Two video lessons will be posted each week (one on Monday morning and one on Wednesday morning). Each video will be 10-20 minutes long.

Each lesson video will follow a similar routine:
1. Phonics/spelling rule will be explicitly taught
2. Teacher will model and encourage students to blend and read words with spelling pattern (quick overview)
3. Teacher will model and encourage students to spell words with the spelling pattern (this will be the bulk of the lesson)
4. Teacher will engage students in a game and/or multi-sensory activity to practice the spelling rule.

I will demonstrate using a different multi-sensory approach each week. A few of the weeks I will demonstrate with materials such as popsicle sticks, shaving cream, fidget poppers, and play doh. I will post in the classroom a week prior if a material will be used in an upcoming video. Students are welcome to use the same item or can simply use paper/pencil. I will demonstrate both in the video.

1 practice handout will also be provided with each video lesson. The handouts will provide additional practice with reading and spelling words that contain the given rule. I will explain the directions for the handout at the end of each video.

Students will be asked to search their house each week for items that contain the spelling pattern and share their findings using a FlipGrid video or pictures. Students can view and respond to each other's findings in the online classroom.

Week 1: soft c and soft g (review from level 1, different words will be used)
Week 2: FLOSS rule (double consonant at the end) and -ck
Week 3: tch and dge
Week 4: CVC doubling rule and Y rule (suffixes)
Week 5: advanced r controlled (ir and ur)
Week 6: VCCV and VCCVe syllable divisions
Week 7: V.CV and VC.V syllable divisions
Week 8: .CLE and V.V
