Homework
1 hour per week. Each week I will suggest an art journal practice for the time between lessons. It is optional, but the aim is to create an art practice that is easy to fit into life and to develop the discipline of doing art almost every day.Class Experience
Class times for this class are not scheduled, but the class is available. If you don’t see a class time listed or that works for your schedule, please click "REQUEST A CLASS" just above the description or send me a message so we can set up your class times. In these private lessons, I will use the subject matter to teach the student fundamental skills like dimension, shading, drawing from observation, color, etc. The longer we study together the more we can learn and the more in-depth we can go with each skill. We can discuss tailoring the subject to your student's needs. My favorite subject to use to teach art skills is nature. I love using animals, plants and all things nature to learn the skills of drawing, observation, and the various art mediums for creating beautiful work. The basic foundation of my art teaching philosophy is overcoming perfectionism tendencies, and teaching kids to "fail well." Learning to fail allows students the courage to be willing to try. My favorite mantra is "Every drawing is practice for the next." Our lessons will incorporate the fundamental skills of art, but our greatest emphasis will be on the mental and emotional practice of becoming an artist who is willing to try, fail, and continually improve without fear or reservations. Does your student love birds? We can use learning to draw and paint birds in different mediums to learn the fundamentals. Does your student love nature and want to learn to draw on Procreate? We can use the two together to create lessons perfect for their subject interests and their desired skill. Nature isn't the only subject we can study. We can study human form, portraits, landscapes, sketching city scenes, etc. This is a five, one hour class commitment. To sign up for a single hour private lesson, or for fewer than a set of five, please message me and we will set it up. We will discuss the materials needed for the course when we settle on the curriculum. My only preference is that students use a sketchbook or journal appropriate for their medium so that they have a single place where they will be working during our lesson and in between lessons.
Learning Goals
Students will start from their current level and improve both their fundamental technical skills of art as well as their artist attitude. The aim will be to teach students not just to know how to create art, but how to have a successful art practice.

Supply List
Art Journal- Sketch journal, mixed media journal, watercolor paper journal, etc. If we decide your student will be using a variety of art mediums, I would suggest a mixed media journal, or something with a heavy weight paper than can handle water or paint. All other materials will be determined by your student's desires for the course.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a lifelong artist and more recently, the author and illustrator of an award winning children's book called Little Birder. It is a non-fiction alphabet book about birds.
I am inspired by the curiosity that comes naturally to children which I have to work diligently to cultivate as an adult. I wanted to create a beautiful resource that encourages children to be curious and observe the world around them. (Ask for information.)
The best thing about being an artist is that art can go hand in hand with just about any topic. Many of my classes will involve nature and observation. Character building skills like curiosity, observation, expressing emotions through art are just some of the skills that are incorporated into my art lessons.
I also like to help kids who are ready to begin mastering art and observation skills gain confidence in themselves through teaching methods that improve the results of their art.
I help kids realize anyone can be an artist and help improve their skills with a few “tricks.” Tricks like anatomy and proportions, seeing negative space, and recognizing underlying shapes. I love watching as kids improve drastically in just one lesson, and gain the confidence in their skill that will become the foundations of their creativity through art.
My art classes are fun, but they're best for students who are passionate about improving their art skills.
