US Grade 8
Course Description: This class will review the basic operations of arithmetic on integers, fractions and decimals. These operations will be used in dealing with ratio, proportions, percent, simple geometry and algebra. As students master these basic concepts, they will move into basic algebra. Students will be expected to understand basic operations with integers, rational numbers, irrational, and real numbers; the use of variables; properties of numbers and of equality; solving equations and inequalities; problem solving with real world applications. Unit 1 - Real Numbers and Exponents Week 1 - Rational Numbers Week 2 - Irrational Numbers Week 3 - Square and Cube Roots Week 4 - Scientific Notation Unit 2 - Equations and Expressions Week 5 - Expressions with Exponents Week 6 - Solving Equations Week 7 - More Solving Equations Unit 3 - Linear and Functional Relationships Week 8 - Intro to Functions and Graphing Week 9 - Linear Functions Week 10 - Graphs and Tables of Linear Functions Week 11 - Increasing and Decreasing, Interpreting Rate of Change Week 12 - Function Qualities and Piece-wise Functions Unit 4 - Systems of Linear Equations Week 13 - Solving Systems by Graphing Week 14 - Solving Systems by Substitutions Week 15 - Solving Systems by Elimination Week 16 - Solving Systems by Inspection Week 17 - Applications Using Systems Week 18 - Review Requirements: Students should expect to have homework almost every day/night in this class. It is strongly recommended that students set aside at least 20 minutes per day for doing homework. Homework will be graded for understanding each week. Homework is 10% of overall grade. Quizzes and tests make up the majority of a students’ course grade. But remember, if you aren’t practicing the math we are learning by doing your homework and class work on a regular basis, your scores on these quizzes/tests will more than likely be lower than they would be if you did do your homework every day. Quizzes are 25% and Tests are 60%of overall grade. Other possible grade includes attendance and participation. Attendance/participation is worth 5% of overall grade. If you ever feel you need more help than what you are receiving during our regularly scheduled classroom time, you should contact me and make arrangements to get extra help through e-mail or scheduling another time. I am very willing to help you. You just need to ask! Grading Scale Description A 90-100% Exceeds Expectations; Independent learner; superior work; all work completed on time at an exceptional level of quality and effort; B 80-89% Meets Expectations; Semi-independent learner; above average work; all work completed on time; did quality work with a few flaws; C 70-79% Passing but does not meet some standards; Dependent learner; average work; most completed on time showing average effort; D 60-69% Passing but only meets minimum standards; Dependent learner; average work; most completed late showing below average effort; F <60% Failing, does not meet minimum standards; Failure; does not meet standards or expectations.

External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Secondary School Administration/Principalship from Grand Valley State University
Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from Grand Valley State University
I am offering this class because some students that attempt Algebra 1 have low confidence and need to be better prepared. I teach to my students not the book. I have been teaching mathematics for more that twenty years, and I believe that all students can succeed. Come join my class!
