Sitting the 11+ exams or Upper KS2 SATS tests can be daunting, with so many different papers. Creative writing can be overlooked in the preparation, or cause some students anxiety when faced with the idea of having to come up with a piece of writing in a limited time. We've all had those awful mental block moments! Feeling prepared can really help to reduce the panic. Join us as we take a look each week at the sorts of different writing challenges that students may face, from being given a title to continuing a given opening to a story and so on. We'll look at factors such as: How to come up with an idea in a short time. What SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar) skills and creative writing skills we may need to showcase. How to craft a piece of creative writing. Keeping an eye on writing within a time frame. Having been involved in invigilating 11+ and SATS exams within school and acting as a reader to aid some students who need extra support, as well as helping with SATS and 11+ preparation, I know that a positive, relaxed approach is far more beneficial than pressurising a student. Helping build confidence and encouraging students is a key element of this class. As the class is ongoing, the content is designed so that students can 'dip in' for a couple of classes just to brush up skills a little, work on particular areas or attend regularly until they have completed their tests. Content does not build from previous weeks and each class acts as a stand-alone session. Please note that whilst I will be happy to read any creative work outside of class and give a couple of comments, I am unable to provide complete detailed feedback for individual students in this class. My 1:1 tuition schedule is currently full but if sessions become available, I will open them up for enrollment. Planned areas of practice for the next few weeks: WB 22nd May: Writing a story using a picture prompt. WB 29th May: Writing an article from a headline. WB 5th June: Write a description of a location. WB 12th June: Answering a question imaginatively. WB 19th June: No classes, as I'll be away for the week. WB 26th June: Writing a diary entry.
Learning Goals
Students will:
Explore how they can come up with an idea/ outline within a short time frame.
Look at the various elements of writing that they may need to demonstrate an understanding of in their piece.
Practice writing on a given theme/ situation/ continuing a beginning, etc.
Look at producing a basic plan to aid focus.

All content is age-appropriate.
Supply List
A notebook or paper and something to write with, or a device to use for writing. A small whiteboard may be handy but by no means necessary.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I have been an educator for 20 years and have extensive experience with the English curriculum in British primary schools. Over those years, I have worked regularly with groups of children specifically on English writing skills. I have been directly involved with practice for the 11+ and KS2 SATS tests for many years (including with my own children). I have worked with students on preparation for the tests, invigilated during SATS and 11+ tests, and have supported children during tests as a Reader.
