Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 5
Any student needs to be able to understand inference in a text, whether fiction or fact. Learners need to be able to decode what a writer is inferring in order to be able to 'read between the lines'. Not only does this enrich their own reading experience but many tests in schools actively look for this skill.
In this class, we will help students understand when information is implied, or not directly stated, improve their skill in drawing conclusions and build up an understanding of what sort of vocabulary to be on the lookout for.
Starting with looking at a few short sentences then building up to longer fiction and non-fiction passages, students will practice how to:
Start building a character profile based on clues in the text
Look for answers to specific questions
Use their own experiences to help understand inference
Find the inferred evidence in a text to support their answers
Look for the relevant part of a text by skim-and-scan reading.
Learning Goals
Students will improve understanding of how inference works in fiction and non-fiction, how to pull information and evidence from a text when it isn't specifically stated and how to search a text for the passages needed without needing to re-read every part.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, I've almost 20 years experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds). Over those years have regularly worked with groups of children specifically on English writing skills. I also have experience of teaching inference classes specifically in preparation for SATS tests.
