US Grade 5 - 6
In this 8 week course, students will explore topics from the grades 5 and 6 curriculum and use their skills to solve practical math problems. This course will cover place value, statistics, ratios, fractions, measurements and geometry. We will also review addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and problem solving techniques. The class will be delivered in two parts. The beginning of each class will be a lecture style format. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and be active listeners. In the second half of each class we will work on problems together as a class. Students will also be given additional problems to work on at home. There will also be an opportunity for students to review any material from a previous class that they need extra help with. • Class 1: In the first class we will review place value. We will discuss the expanded form of numbers, and use this to solve word problems. We will also review decimals, integers and number lines. • Class 2: In the second class we will review addition, subtraction, division and multiplication of whole numbers. We will then use these to solve money based word problems. We will discuss the importance of estimates and practice estimating products and quotients. • Class 3: In the third class we will review fractions and ratios. Students will practice writing out fractions and ratios to correspond with word problems. We will also use these to practice dividing objects between people. • Class 4: The fourth class will focus on reviewing the material from previous three weeks and provide extra practice problems and support. • Class 5: In the fifth class we will being discussing percentages and statistics. We will introduce the concept of statistics and calculate mean, median, mode and range. We will also practice estimating outcomes. • Class 6: In the sixth class students will explore measurements. We will practice converting metric units. We will also practice finding the area, perimeter and volume of basic shapes. • Class 7: In the seventh class we will practice graphing. We will practice reflections, rotations and translations. We will also talk about how graphs can help us present and understand material quickly. • Class 8: The eighth class will be an activity based class where we practice the skills learned throughout the course.
