In this fun and informative ongoing class, students will learn how to make persuasive arguments and practice presenting them. In each class we will pick a topic and practice crafting arguments around it. Students will learn to remain calm under pressure, utilize facts and evidence, use logic to anticipate rebuttals, and concede points when necessary. This class is ideal for anyone interested in pursuing a career in law, or with an interest in debate. Debating is an important life skill because it teaches students that they can advocate for themselves while remaining calm, friendly, and respectful. It also teaches students that public speaking can be both fun and interesting. Students will also have the opportunity to perfect their listening skills as they are encouraged to listen to and cheer on their friends. Topics will be non-controversial and relevant to the students. The teacher will facilitate, offer suggestions and help students improve their debating styles. Students do not need to complete any prep work before class. Student's will brainstorm ideas about each topic together. • During the week of February 28th students will debate: Are things from the past or things from the present better? Subsequent topics will be learner suggested and this page will be updated weekly.
Learning Goals
• Learn to actively listen and respond to others.
• Learn to become confident public speakers.
