In this one time course we will be reviewing our r-controlled vowels sounds (ar, er, ir, ur, or) and rules to help us remember when to use them. We will learn strategies for decoding unfamiliar words through reading as well as strategies for hearing a word, and determining the letters that make the sounds we hear in order to spell a word. Overview of the class: - Introduction/Greeting - R-Controlled Vowels - Rules for usage - Reading strategies/Decoding words (Phonics) - Hearing a word and determining the letters to spell the word (Phonological Awareness) Required Experience: This class is best used as a review. It is best if learners have prior knowledge of consonants and their sounds as well as vowels and their sounds. It is also helpful if learners have prior experience blending consonants together in words such as: blend and split. Learner Involvement: Learners will get an opportunity to practice reading aloud, decoding aloud, and speaking aloud in the class. They will also be writing out words and sharing their work with each other.
Learning Goals
Learners will improve their reading and spelling abilities when they become more familiar with the different rules and sounds r-controlled vowels can make, and learning/practicing blending them together to form words. Learners will also learn strategies for decoding unfamiliar words in reading.
