OVERVIEW Jaden's parents want to schedule weekly private sessions where he can creatively express himself as he reads and discusses high-interest text in a one-on-one setting with a teacher. HOW STUDENT WILL LEARN | TEACHER'S TEACHING STYLE Learning will take place through a one-on-one customized approach to the “Mastering the Art of Reading" course, specifically "Strategies for Understanding Fiction" and "Summarizing and Analyzing Texts" sections. Because the approach to understanding agreed upon reading selections will be as "readers" AND "writers," sections from "The Short Story: An Author's Guide to Writing" course, specifically "Story Elements," "Dialogue," "Conflict," and "Character Creation" will also be covered. Some sessions may include, but are not limited to, slides, readings (aloud and silent), worksheets, reflections, role-playing, and discussion. Jaden will have a chance to learn, practice, and then demonstrate learning during this time by meeting agreed benchmarks established with/by all parties before the start date, including crafting original stories. TOPICS COVERED DURING READINGS --Strategies for Understanding Fiction --Summarizing and Analyzing Texts --Story Elements --Dialogue --Conflict --Character Creation INTERACTIONS WITH TEACHER Student/parents will have access to the teacher 24/7. Jaden will be expected to share his experiences before, during, and after attempted strategies. PROPOSED SCHEDULE: Summer Months LENGTH OF SESSIONS: Sixty Minutes READING SELECTION(S): To be determined through a discussion with Jaden and parents. GOAL: Maximize interest by allowing Jaden to determine either genre, title, length, or all three.
