1-2 hours per week. Weekly homework will be given to aid in student practice of the concepts discussed in class and to check for understanding.

In this fast-paced introduction to music theory we will cover the basics of music notation, intervals, scales, and chords. This course is designed for any student who wishes to gain a better understanding of music in the western classical tradition. This course will also build the foundational knowledge of music theory necessary for students who wish to continue their studies at the college level. 
Instruction will be a combination of lecture with slides, listening examples, and student discussion.

Students will learn the basics of music theory as it pertains to notation, scales, and chords.
Students will gain an increased understanding to aid in music performance, analysis, or composition.

Lesson 1:
Music Notation
 In this session, we will learn how to notate and read pitch and rhythm in Western Classical music tradition.

Lesson 2:
Intervals
 In this lesson, we will explore how notes interact. We will listen to musical examples and learn to measure the distance between notes known as the interval. This knowledge will prepare us for the study of scales and chords in the next classes.

Lesson 3:
Scales and Key Signatures
 In this lesson, we will learn to build the most basic groupings of notes, the scale. In this session, we will explore the concept of the Major scale through listening and written examples. We will also learn to recognize the key signatures in written music.

Lesson 4:
Minor Scales and other scales
 We will continue to explore the concept of scales in this class by looking at the minor scale in comparison to the major scale. We will also briefly explore the concept of scales outside of major and minor.

I teach classes in music and student success. I hold a doctorate of music in bassoon performance. As a professional musician, I play in orchestras, chamber ensembles and teach music both privately and in schools. I have experience teaching students from preschool to the university level. 
I believe in providing students with the tools and information they need for excellence.  I want students to have the skills they need to become their own teachers. 
When I'm not spending time with my husband and kids, I love to learn new skills like pottery, tap dance, or crafts of all kinds.
