What's included

Homework
1 hour per week. Students will benefit most from this class when they practice the music between classes. Students should plan to play the recorder for three 10-minute sessions each week.
Assessment
Students will have three chances to play for the class in an informal assessment or submit a recording to the teacher.
Grading
A certificate of completion will be provided. A letter grade will be provided on request.

Beginner Level
In this 7-week class students will learn the basics of music and playing an instrument.

This course is designed to be paced in a way that allows students to master the concepts presented in this introductory recorder course, setting them up for future success at recorder and music. We will learn new concepts each class as well as review and check for understanding of previous classes. Information will be presented through teacher lead instruction, video, games, and student discussion and playing.

In this class we will learn three songs and the notes G, A, and B. We will also work on reading music, reading rhythm notation, producing a good sound, and problem solving when playing an instrument.

Recorder is a wonderful instrument learn music skills. It is a instrument that is accessible for students in second to fourth grade but can also be played at a professional level of artistry. Skills learned on the recorder can also transfer to other instruments setting students up for future success in music.

Students will improve their fundamental music skills using the hands on experience of learning to play the recorder.

Lesson 1:
Welcome Recorder Ninjas
 In this lesson we will learn  all the basics of the recorder. We will learn about hand placement, using air, and making a sound. We will play our first three notes G, A, and B. We will start the song "Hot Cross Buns" by ear.

Lesson 2:
Hot Cross Buns
 In this lesson we will review all the basics we learned in week one and learn the song "Hot Cross Buns." We will also connect what we learned last week to written music.

Lesson 3:
White Belt
 In this lesson we will review Hot Cross Buns. We will have the chance to play "Hot Cross Buns" for each other and earn the white belt.

Lesson 4:
Gently Sleep
 In this lesson we will apply everything we know to learning a new song, "Gently Sleep." In addition we will focus on how to use our air to get a great sound on our recorders.

Supply List
Recorder Karate 1 Student Book with Yamaha 3-Piece Ivory Recorder - cost approx. $9. This can be purchused at Music K-8 online.
Other recorders are acceptible but Yamaha is recomended.
You may also wish to purchese the Recorder reward belts Essential Nine pack of 1 belt each for approx. $2.50
