Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
This Part 1 continuing class is primarily for those students who have already attended the regular Part 1 class and have written about the bird, dog, cat, horse and rabbit. In this class we will write about a variety of animals, perhaps by the student's choice, such as penguin, mouse, frog, lion, etc. This class is designed for those students who want to be part of an ongoing class, but are not quite ready for the Parts 2-9 ongoing class. This class works well for students who are just beginning to write stories or for reluctant writers. If the student has not yet taken the basic Part 1 ongoing class, please look for the class titled "Creative Writing for Young Children (Part 1 Ongoing) class."

This course is built around weekly prompts for young writers. The teacher will show the students the writing prompt and then the teacher will model writing sentences as the story develops. The students will be encouraged to personalize their stories as they write by adding some unique details. Students will have the opportunity to share their stories with the class and they will be encouraged to read the stories to their family after class.

Each week we will write about a different animal:

Week 1 (Each week we will write about a different animal)
Week 2 (Each week we will write about a different animal)
Week 3 (Each week we will write about a different animal)
Week 4 (Each week we will write about a different animal)
Week 5 (Each week we will write about a different animal)

For this class, students need to have the ability to put words down on paper. Spelling words correctly is not critical at this point; simply having the ability to sound out words and write them down is all that is necessary.

FIve year olds and nine year olds are welcome to take this class if the parent feels that this class is a good fit for them. Five year olds need to be comfortable with basic reading and also comfortable with copying and writing words down.

I have been teaching voluntarily and professionally for more than 30 years. I am a certified teacher who loves introducing children to new concepts and watching them grow and advance their knowledge and capabilities. On Outschool I teach Language Arts classes for children in the lower elementary grades. My most popular class is my Creative Writing series that jumpstarts young children to writing a story. I have offered various Grammar classes as well as Novel Study classes all for the lower elementary ages in the past.

I have taught in the public school system both full time and part time for 11 years. I have homeschooled my three children, all of whom have graduated high school and moved on to college level work.
