Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
Beginner Level
Creative Writing for Young Children is a one time class that is designed to jumpstart your child in writing. It is based on the same model as the teacher's Creative Writing for Young Children Part 1 ongoing class. The teacher will show the students the writing prompt and then the teacher will model writing sentences as the story develops. The students will be encouraged to personalize their stories as they write by adding some unique details. Students will have the opportunity to share their stories with the class and they can read the stories to their family after class.

For this class, students need to have the ability to put words down on paper. Spelling words correctly is not critical at this point; simply having the ability to sound out words and write or copy them down is all that is necessary. This class will work both for reluctant writers and for young writers that are excited about writing.

FIve year olds and nine year olds are welcome to take this class if the parent feels that this class is a good fit for them. Five year olds need to be comfortable with basic reading and also comfortable with copying and writing words down.

After teaching this Creative Writing Series to more than 1,500 students, these are some general principles that I have noticed:
1. Students who did not enjoy writing have fun in this class.
2. Students who love to write have fun in this class.
3. ESL students benefit because of the immersion in the English language.
4. Students that need help with sentence structure will receive that help in this class and become immersed in good writing.
5. Students receive help organizing their ideas into a written format.
6. Students gain confidence in their writing skills and realize that they CAN write.
