Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
This active, Montessori style camp is designed to teach the basics of nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions and interjections.

Day 1: Nouns and articles
Day 2: Adjectives
Day 3: Verbs
Day 4: Adverbs
Day 5: Pronouns
Day 6: Prepositions
Day 7: Conjunctions
Day 8: Interjections

Using nouns found in each learner's home, we will build from the ground up to learn about each part of speech. Learners will actively participate in movement to explore action verbs and adverbs. They will learn about the "Bossy" pronoun and how it just takes over for the noun family sometimes. Prepositions will show us how noun families relate to each other and we will play an "I spy" game to practice using many different prepositional phrases. Conjunctions will allow us to add glue into our sentences to stick nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and pronouns together. Interjections will jump into sentences and learners will practice identifying the different parts of speech they've learned along the way. We will practice writing, reading, and labeling our completed sentences.

Students should have access to the grammar symbol manipulatives and have paper handy to write and label completed phrases or sentences.

This is a great class for basic literacy practice in a meaningful context. Grammar doesn't have to be a tough concept to battle through in later years. With a hands-on Montessori approach, the concepts can be understood in a simple, concrete way and students can have fun while learning! Elementary aged learners do not need previous Montessori experience to benefit from this class.
Learning Goals
Learners will learn:
- that nouns can be people, places, or things
- that adjectives are words that describe nouns
- that the three basic articles in English are "a," "an," and "the"
- that a verb is an action
- that adverbs add to verbs by telling how the action is done
- that prepositions "bridge" nouns from one to another
- that pronouns take the place of nouns in a sentence
- that conjunctions act like glue or gum to stick ideas together
- many conjunctions and how they are used in sentences
- that interjections jump into sentences abruptly
- to work with Montessori grammar symbols that help to provide concrete labels for the different parts of speech.
Learners will practice writing, reading, and labeling nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions and interjections.
