Learning the rules of grammar at the beginning of elementary school builds a solid foundation for young learners to become excellent and enthusiastic writers ~ starting now and continuing throughout their schooling and lives. Grammar and English is much more fun and impactful when students can be active participants. This is why I've created a newsroom scenario in which learners have an opportunity to learn parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization through journalism-themed activities. After having an opportunity to grasp a solid understanding of the grammar lesson of the day, the students become "editors" ~ working together to practice the new rule by finding mistakes in a custom-made short news story. Then, the "editors" transition to become "reporters" and write exciting sentences of their own ~ showcasing their knowledge of a new skill. Our Class Meeting Schedule: 1. Introductions 2. Interactive Lesson Time. Learn and discuss a part of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and conjunctions. Also, learn about the types of punctuation and how to use them, as well as capitalization rules. 3. 🔍 Practice! Find and fix mistakes in sample sentences. 4. ✏️ Reporter's Notebook ~ Write original sentences or mini news stories using new grammar knowledge. For learners who are not writing yet, I will write their sentence and use screen share so your learner can advise about capitalization and punctuation and then write the sentence by modeling. I welcome opportunities to provide individual feedback on the day's writing exercise if you upload your learner's writing sample after class. Each lesson includes worksheets I have created unique to this class. I send these materials out in an announcement message via the online classroom each week. I encourage families to print these resources if they have the means to do so. Having the materials printed and ready to go by the start of each class can enhance your learner's engagement and participation. If families are unable to print the materials, learners are able to see and follow along with the activity/worksheet on my screen. Students will need paper for the writing exercise at the end of each class. The course topics will cycle through on a 6-week basis. Your learner can join in every week or the weeks that work best for your schedule. If a section is already in progress, your learner is welcome to join at any time. (The following schedule is subject to change.) Week of 11/03 - 11/09: Nouns and Capitalization Week of 11/10 - 11/16: Pronouns Week of 11/17 - 11/23: Verbs Week of 11/24 - 11/30: Punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation point, and comma) Week of 12/01 - 12/07: Adjectives Week of 12/08 - 12/14: Conjunctions
