Come along with me as we begin reading decodable and entertaining books together! All 12 of the books cover short vowels, which slowly increase in difficulty. These books are designed to build confidence in beginner readers. These lessons are very similar to my 1:1 tutoring sessions except that they are not live. Week 1Lesson 1Practice short a while reading "Zac's Pal"Your learner will read "Zac's Pal" by Jill Lauren. They will review the sounds for "a, n, p, s, t". They will engage in activities that sharpen their ability to identify vowel sounds within words. They will find the first sound in a word and blend words ending in -at. Additionally, they will practice decoding words with a short "a" sound. They will review the sight words [is, a, no, on, the]. We will focus on the story's plot. Finally, they will summarize Zac's attempts to wake up the cat.Lesson 2Practice short a while reading "Zac's Cap"Your learner will read "Zac's Cap" by Jill Lauren. They will practice sounds for letters [a, d, j, l, z] and pinpoint the /p/ sound in words. We'll blend words ending in -at, -ad, -an, and sort words with vowels /o/ and /a/. Additionally, we'll discuss how vowels behave in open and closed syllables. Also, we'll review sight words [is, a, the, on, no]. Following our reading session, they will explain Zac's problem and its resolution.Lesson 3Practice short i while reading "A Pig and His Wig"Your learner will read "A Pig and His Wig" by Jill Lauren. They will practice the sounds for letters [b, d, f, k, x] and identify ending sounds in words, focusing on the individual sound /p/. We'll also learn the contraction [it's] and carefully blend words with short /a/. Additionally, we'll work on creating words ending in -id and -ig, sorting them by their vowel sounds. Also, we'll review sight words [love, on, no, if, of]. Afterward, summarize the pig's dilemma and resolution.Week 2Lesson 4Practice short i while reading "Tag Dad"Your learner will read "Tag Dad" by Jill Lauren. Before reading, the student will practice phonic sounds [b, d, g, i, p]. They will identify short /i/ vowel sounds, blend words with short /i/ and /a/, and sort words with /b/ and /d/. Sight words [have, on, to, it, if] will be reviewed. During the reading, the student will answer comprehension questions, discuss the setting and characters, and summarize the story to demonstrate understanding.Lesson 5Practice short i while reading "So Big"Your learner will read "So Big!" by Jill Lauren. They will practice letter sounds "b, h, i, n, p" and identify vowels, blend words with short "a" and "i", and learn about open and closed syllables. They'll also explore when to use long or short vowel sounds. We'll review sight words [have, love, and, in, his]. After reading, your learner will discuss the plot and summarize why Min and Yin hid from each other and what made them wake up from their dream.Lesson 6Practice short o while reading "Rod's Box"Your learner will read "Rod's Box" by Jill Lauren. Before reading, they will make predictions about the box's contents. The learner will practice sounds for: d, i, o, t, x, and listen for final sounds in words. They'll blend words with a focus on the /a/ vowel, make words with the "id" rime, and sort words with /b/ or /d/. Exploring open and closed syllable types, they'll review sight words [to, my, in, so, on]. Afterward, they will explain the story's main plot.Week 3Lesson 7Practice short o while reading "To The Top"Your learner will read "To the Top" by Jill Lauren. They'll practice sounds for letters [i, l, o, s, t] and identify ending sounds. They'll sound out words by segmenting them and putting them together. The learner will sort words with vowels /a/ and /i/, add the ending -s sound, and learn about open and closed syllable types. Reviewed sight words: [my, to, of, at, do]. After reading, the learner will explain the main event of the story.Lesson 8Practice short u while reading "Buzz, Buzz"Your learner will read "Buzz, Buzz" by Jill Lauren. They'll review synthetic phonic sounds [f, p, r, s, u] and identify vowel sounds. Focusing on short /u/ and /a/ sounds, they'll practice blending words. Separating onset from rhyme, they'll work on reading accuracy. Learner will learn about open and closed syllables' impact on vowel sounds. Reviewed sight words: [for, of, do, my, suds]. After reading, they'll summarize the story, explaining Gus's change of heart towards the bug.Lesson 9Practice short u while reading "Gus's Pup"Your learner will read "Gus's Pup" by Jill Lauren. They'll practice reading words with the short /u/, breaking them into individual sounds for accuracy. They'll also read words with short /i/, starting with 2-letter and then 3-letter words, and words with /o/ with different ending sounds. Learner will separate words by saying the initial sound first. Reviewed sight words: [was, love, do, be, on]. After reading, they'll summarize what the dog did and infer Gus's feelings about his puppy.Week 4Lesson 10Practice short u while reading "Yum, Yum, Nuts!"Your learner will read "Yum, Yum, Nuts!" by Jill Lauren. They will practice the sounds for [b, d, o, u, y] and identifying ending sounds in words. Additionally, they will learn to blend words with short /a/ sounds, recognize middle vowel sounds, and sort words by their vowels, specifically /i/ and /o/. We'll isolate initial sounds and review these sight words: [have, on, was, are, suds]. After reading, you will summarize the plot and discuss the lesson the bear cub learned.Lesson 11Practice short e while reading "Get Up!"Your learner will read "Get Up!" by Jill Lauren. They will review the sounds for [b, d, e, j, y] and listen for short /e/ sounds while identifying middle sounds. They'll blend words with short /e/ and /i/, distinguish between -ill and -ell endings, and separate onsets from rimes in short /u/ words. Also, they'll learn the long "e" sound in words like "me" and "she". The sight words to review are [love, do, was, my, you]. Afterward, they'll summarize the plot and discuss character motivations.Lesson 12Practice short e while reading "Mel"Your learner will read "Mel" by Jill Lauren. They'll practice the sounds for [e, l, p, u, w] using actions. They'll identify middle vowel sounds, and blend words with short /e/ and /i/. Additionally, you'll create words ending with -ill and learn when to use long vowel sounds. They'll review the sight words [want, was, are, is, if]. Afterward, they'll summarize the main events and discuss how the chick solved the problem in the story.
Learners will learn phonological awareness, phonics skills, reading strategies, and reading comprehension.

I received my Teacher Certificate in Idaho in 2011, which allowed me to teach Reading/Writing for 7th and 12th grade for 2 years. I received my TESOL certificate and taught ESL for 5 years.
