Beginner Level
Come along with me as we begin reading decodable and entertaining books together! All 12 of the books cover short vowels, which slowly increase in difficulty. These books are designed to build confidence in beginner readers. These lessons are very similar to my 1:1 tutoring sessions except that they are not live. Instead, you will watch 3 pre-recorded video lessons each week for 4 weeks. You can view the syllabus to see the topics we will cover for each lesson. The lessons will become available as you progress through the 4-week course if using the self-paced option. If you choose to pay up-front, all lessons will be available right away. These lessons can help your learner move on to the next step in reading or serve as a refresher to achieve mastery of short vowels. CLASS STRUCTURE: Before reading each book, we will practice 5 phonemes. We will do some listening activities to practice phonological awareness. We will segment words and then blend sounds to achieve reading accuracy. We will go over high-frequency words and use them in a sentence. We will read the book on-screen. First, the learner will read it and then I will read it afterward so they can check their accuracy and also practice reading comprehension. After the reading, I will ask questions that encourage reading comprehension skills. SCHEDULE: This is a self-paced class, so there are no live meetings. You can complete each lesson on your own time throughout each week! There will be 6 worksheets throughout the 4 week class. Enjoy 12 video lessons as we read 12 books together! Week 1: Zac's Pal, Zac's Cap, A Pig and His Wig (by Jill Lauren) Week 2: Tag Dad, So Big, Rod's Box Week 3: To The Top, Buzz, Buzz, Gus's Pup Week 4: Yum, Yum, Nuts, Get Up, Mel ~What will be taught? *Phonological Awareness *Phonics skills *Reading strategies *Reading comprehension ~What topics will you cover? *Short vowel sounds *First, middle, and last sounds *Rhyming words *Segmenting words *Blending words *5 sight words per class ~How will you teach? I will release 3 video lessons throughout each week. Each YouTube video will include the entire lesson and book reading activity. ~What's your teaching style? I teach as though the student is right there in class with me. I use the "I do - You do - We do" strategy. In the beginning, I will show the learner how to sound out a word. Then I will give the student a chance to blend with me. Then I will have the learners read by themselves. ~How much will learners get to interact with you and each other? Even though the class is not live, I would love for the child to interact with the video lesson. That means they can follow my example of saying the sounds out loud and reading out loud. Also, you can message me in the classroom or in a separate Outschool message with any questions you might have. Also, you can upload a video or audio of the learner reading the book. ~Any required experience or knowledge learners need? The student should already have basic phonological awareness. They should know how to sound out words like "cat, mat, hop" with a little help. I also offer live 1:1 reading tutoring classes that are structured very similarly to these self-paced classes, but they are live and conducted on Zoom. https://outschool.com/classes/practice-phonics-reading-skills-and-read-a-book-Q48NmyGP#usJ1V5iJLg

Syllabus
12 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Practice short a while reading "Zac's Pal"
Your learner will read "Zac's Pal" by Jill Lauren. They will review the sounds for "a, n, p, s, t". They will engage in activities that sharpen their ability to identify vowel sounds within words. They will find the first sound in a word and blend words ending in -at. Additionally, they will practice decoding words with a short "a" sound. They will review the sight words [is, a, no, on, the]. We will focus on the story's plot. Finally, they will summarize Zac's attempts to wake up the cat.
Lesson 2:
Practice short a while reading "Zac's Cap"
Your learner will read "Zac's Cap" by Jill Lauren. They will practice sounds for letters [a, d, j, l, z] and pinpoint the /p/ sound in words. We'll blend words ending in -at, -ad, -an, and sort words with vowels /o/ and /a/. Additionally, we'll discuss how vowels behave in open and closed syllables. Also, we'll review sight words [is, a, the, on, no]. Following our reading session, they will explain Zac's problem and its resolution.
Lesson 3:
Practice short i while reading "A Pig and His Wig"
Your learner will read "A Pig and His Wig" by Jill Lauren. They will practice the sounds for letters [b, d, f, k, x] and identify ending sounds in words, focusing on the individual sound /p/. We'll also learn the contraction [it's] and carefully blend words with short /a/. Additionally, we'll work on creating words ending in -id and -ig, sorting them by their vowel sounds. Also, we'll review sight words [love, on, no, if, of]. Afterward, summarize the pig's dilemma and resolution.
Lesson 4:
Practice short i while reading "Tag Dad"
Your learner will read "Tag Dad" by Jill Lauren. Before reading, the student will practice phonic sounds [b, d, g, i, p]. They will identify short /i/ vowel sounds, blend words with short /i/ and /a/, and sort words with /b/ and /d/. Sight words [have, on, to, it, if] will be reviewed. During the reading, the student will answer comprehension questions, discuss the setting and characters, and summarize the story to demonstrate understanding.
