Class Experience

In this one-time course, learners will explore various emotions and strategies to manage the everyday challenges they encounter. We will discuss what a mindset is and how it can be utilized as a meaningful tool to persevere.  

Class conversation centers on Laurie Wright’s engaging book, “Mindful Mantras: I Can Handle It!” After an interactive read aloud, students will be encouraged to share their own ideas about how they solve problems through thinking creatively. We will develop an emotional vocabulary to guide our conversation, using sentence frames, graphic organizers, and role playing. 

By sharing collective experience and ideas, learners can feel empowered to make positive choices for themselves, fostering both independence and an awareness of how our mindset affects us!

Learning Goals

Students will have *exposure* to the below learning goals but not mastery, given the course timeframe:

1.	Discuss emotions and recognize how they are linked to behavior.  
2.	Define emotions discussed and what a mindset is.
3.	Develop self-awareness and self-management skills through exploring emotional strategies and mindset. 
4.	Listen to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and text.
5.	Build on conversations by responding to the comments of others.

I have taught many lessons centered on social skills. I feel it's important to create a space for learners to share their ideas about emotions and problem-solving, as these conversations help empower. In particular, I enjoy engaging students through read alouds. Using 'Mindful Mantras' as a mentor text provides a wonderful framework to guide these discussions.
