US Grade 1 - 2
Students will learn a catchy tune to help them remember when to add, subtract, multiply, or divide. We look at the basic action (including both subtraction functions) as well as the code words. We will work several word problems of each type then look at additional strategies such as picturing the action, drawing it, simplifying complex problems, and ignoring unnecessary information. Finally, learners will start creating their own word problems based on the open-ended pictures provided, which is the best way to really learn. Before the class, learners should know how to add and subtract (and preferably how to multiply and divide but it's not as essential).
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basic actions as well as common code words for the four main math functions. They will also learn commonly used "code words" to help them know which function will help them solve the problem. Then we will go over additional strategies for solving word problems. To make sure they understand, we will be doing examples as we go and, at the end of class, they will have the opportunity to make up their own word problems.

Teacher expertise and credentials
California Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, my name is Jan Bergesen, but the kids at school call me Ms. B. I've been an elementary school teacher for 35 years. Through the years, I have successfully developed a variety of unique ways of teaching things many children find difficult. Whether it's multiplication facts, math word problems, how to draw a person, how to write a paragraph or essay, learning to do ventriloquism, or even how to juggle, there's nothing I like more than watching learning happen. Did you notice the juggling in that list? I was a national award winning professional clown for 15 years and can share from those experiences as well. With that kind of a background, you know I like to have a fun, lively, creative class! I'm looking forward to helping your child experience the joy of learning.
