US Grade 4 - 7
We will be looking at fractions - from simple to complex - in a way that makes sense. On day, one we will be working on adding and subtracting "like" fractions with the same denominators. Then we will find ways to reduce our answer to simplest form. On day two, we will add and subtract "unlike" fractions with different denominators. In order to do that, we will need to find the common denominator. On day three, we will make and resolve improper fractions as well as add and subtract mixed numbers.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what fractions are. They will discover a number of ways to reduce a fraction to simplest form. They will learn a number of ways to find a common denominator and the benefits of finding the lowest common denominator. In adding and subtracting mixed numbers, they will learn how to "borrow" and "carry" from fractions to whole numbers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
California Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, my name is Jan Bergesen, but the kids at school call me Ms. B. I've been an elementary school teacher for 35 years. Through the years, I have successfully developed a variety of unique ways of teaching things many children find difficult. Whether it's multiplication facts, math word problems, how to draw a person, how to write a paragraph or essay, learning to do ventriloquism, or even how to juggle, there's nothing I like more than watching learning happen. Did you notice the juggling in that list? I was a national award winning professional clown for 15 years and can share from those experiences as well. With that kind of a background, you know I like to have a fun, lively, creative class! I'm looking forward to helping your child experience the joy of learning.
