Math Talks: Understanding Fractions, Decimals and Percent Intensive Support

Math Talks classes are a fun and interactive way to learn new math strategies. This fractions, decimals and percent class explores strategies to solve percent problems using mental math. We will begin each session with a minds-on math activity to prompt learners to think about fractions and percent. Learners will develop an understanding of the relationship between fractions and percent. We will determine what is a benchmark number (25%, 50%, 10%, 100%) and discuss how using benchmark numbers helps us to solve mental math problems. Visual representations (bar model, number line) will be used to help learners "see" the math and make connections. This class focuses on building a conceptual understanding of fractions and percent. Learners will engage in a fun math class that builds knowledge, values the importance of making mistakes and challenges learns to think like a mathematician.  
Course breakdown is as follows:
Week 1 - What is a benchmark number? How are fractions, decimals and percent similar? Finding equivalent fractions and percent.
Week 2 - Using benchmark numbers to solve percent problems such as 35% of 120
Week 3 - Applying new strategies to solve for real-world math experiences
