Math Talks: Friendly Tens and Basic Facts

This class is similar to the popular Math Talks: Mental Math and the Basic Facts with a focus on Making Friendly Tens.  It will provide a great introduction to mental math for young learners.
Math Talks are an effective way to build learner confidence with numbers while developing an understanding of adding and subtracting numbers.  During this live class learners will interact with both the teacher and other learners to solve problems one and two-digit addition and subtraction problems.  We will emphasize friendly tens and how number bonds help us to solve mental math problems.  We will break apart numbers using place value and develop strategies to solve mental math questions. Math problems are strategically chosen to focus on building specific strategies each session. This class will focus on sharing math thinking in a safe space with an emphasis on making sense of mathematics.  We will draw out student thinking to allow students to "see" the math, make connections and deepen their understanding of number.  We will use various images to engage learners in math talk. Studies show that memorization and drills don't work for all students.  When students understand numbers...they have the skills to solve problems in a way that makes sense to them.  Students will build a math mindset that will give them the confidence to be the best that they can be!
