Class Experience

Does your child ever solve math problems in ways different from others? Does your child usually have the answer, but is told the problem must be solved a specific way? Students who enjoy solving math problems in “different” ways will realize they are not alone.

During this weekly ongoing class, learners will engage in discussion as we explore different ways each math problem can be solved. Students will be given time to work on the problems (using pencil/paper, a whiteboard, or solving problems mentally).

We will then have class discussion of how they arrived at their solution. This is a discussion (non-lecture) class.

Topics include a mixture of everyday word problems involving whole numbers, decimals, percents and fractions.

Prerequisite: Students should be familiar with operations with decimals, percents and fractions.

**Each class will consist of new examples. Learners can join the class any week.

Class Format:
- Problem #1
- Discussion of different ways students solved the problem
- Proceed in same manner until the end of class time

Come prepared to listen and learn. In order for me to monitor students understanding (usually through facial expressions) and for learners to interact and experience a similar classroom environment, students will be encouraged to keep their cameras open throughout the entire class.

Learning Goals

Through teacher and peer explanations, learners will learn different ways to solve the same math problem.

Other Details

Supply List

————————————————————————

My name is Vanleer. Children can learn math! Whether it’s struggling with math concepts or working at an accelerated pace, I look forward to helping your child experience success in math!

(I offer math classes, as well as private tutoring. Feel free to contact me to set up a tutoring session for your learner.)

It's so rewarding getting to help students progress in math, while helping them build a solid math foundation. I enjoy working with children of all ages and am passionate about helping children learn math. I use various methods -- including manipulatives, problem solving skills, puzzles and games. My years of teaching experience allow me to recognize areas in which a student is struggling or advancing.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education and my Master’s degree in Elementary Education. As a state-licensed math teacher for the past 25 years, my experience includes teaching public school classes (grades 7-12), private tutoring (grades K-12), and facilitating homeschool co-op classes. I have been an online tutor since 2017. For the past 20 years, I have been homeschooling my three children, including a college graduate and a recent high school graduate.

My interests include gardening, baking, photography, spending time with my children and learning something new every day.

I look forward to meeting your child in class.
