What's included

30 live meetings
22 hrs 30 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners should try to complete some of the practice and review exercises for each lesson. I recommend getting the Solutions Manual (Saxon Math 8/7, 3rd Edition, Solutions Manual). It contains step-by-step solutions to every problem in the textbook. This is a great way for learners and parents to check answers and get a full understanding of how to solve each problem. The answers to the odd-numbered exercises are in the back of the textbook.
Assessment
This class is a non-graded course. We practice many exercises together in class. Completing some of the at-home math practice exercises daily is recommended. Each week in the Outschool classroom, I post screenshots of some of the notes and exercises from our time in class. Additionally, the Solutions Manual (practice exercises) and Test Booklet (test questions) each have step-by-step solutions for all of the practice exercises and test questions. This allows parents the opportunity to “quiz” as their learners show understanding of the material, at their own pace. I suggest, for parents who prefer a testing schedule, once every 4-5 weeks.

This is a full-curriculum course. Learners can join the class any week. See class description and syllabus for more details about this class and weekly lessons.

As a person who struggled with math as a younger student, I can empathize with and relate to students as they try to learn new and difficult concepts. I display patience with the learners, give them time to respond, and offer encouragement for their efforts. Students should be made to feel comfortable when they are willing to participate in class.

This is a complete academic course covering Lessons 61 - 120 of Saxon 8/7. The goal is to cover 3-4 lessons each week. In this live group class, learners will meet twice a week to learn and practice the topics in the course. Some topics include finding the area of a shape, percent of a number, proportions, signed numbers, two-step equations, surface area, simple interest, graphing linear inequalities and slope-intercept form.

During each class, the new lesson will be introduced to the learners. We will then complete some exercises together. Students are encouraged to ask questions in class. I will make every effort to involve students in class participation.

As appropriate, I incorporate review material into the lessons to further solidify the math concepts to the learners.

Students should be familiar with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.

Learners should try to complete some of the practice and review exercises for each lesson.

Students will need the following textbook: Saxon Math 8/7, 3rd Edition.

I also recommend getting the Solutions Manual (Saxon Math 8/7, 3rd Edition, Solutions Manual). It contains step-by-step solutions to every problem in the textbook.

This is a great way for learners and parents to check answers and get a full understanding of how to solve each problem.

The answers to the odd-numbered exercises are in the back of the textbook.

Come prepared to listen and learn. I monitor learners' understanding (usually through facial expressions). Open cameras also allow learners to interact and experience a class environment.

I have been teaching math (as a classroom teacher and tutor) for 25+ years. As a person who struggled with math as a younger student, I can empathize with and relate to students as they try to learn new and difficult concepts. A lot of encouragement goes a long way!
