This class will teach students how to use sensory details and figurative language to enhance their descriptive writing. We’ll cover key topics such as using specific language to "show, not tell," and how to bring everyday scenes to life through rich descriptions. The class is structured around interactive activities that blend visual learning with writing practice. I’ll guide students through each topic using slides, visual prompts, and collaborative discussions. We will work on fun, hands-on writing activities that help students apply their skills in real-time. Each activity is designed to make writing enjoyable and accessible to all students. My teaching style is supportive and student-centered, with an emphasis on making writing a fun, creative exploration. Students will interact with me directly through writing games, discussions, and optional share-outs.
Learning Goals
Master Sensory Details: Students will learn how to enhance their writing by incorporating sensory details, using sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste to create vivid, immersive descriptions that engage readers.
Use Figurative Language: Students will develop their ability to craft creative comparisons through similes and metaphors, learning how to use these techniques to add depth and imagination to their descriptions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
California Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education
Bachelor's Degree in English Language and Literature from California State University Long Beach
Hello Everyone,
I’m Ms. Donna, and I’m so grateful that you’re here! I hold a teaching credential in secondary English education and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. With over a decade of experience in education and youth development, I've worn many hats: high school English teacher, K-12 reading/writing tutor, substitute across K-12, swim and surf instructor, gymnastics coach, and most recently, private literacy instructor. My diverse background allows me to connect meaningfully with various age groups, including students who need specialized attention. My approach is rooted in empathy, adaptability, and a genuine love for helping others discover their potential.
My current class offerings focus on guiding students in becoming stronger writers, articulate communicators, deeper critical thinkers, and more authentic, expressive individuals. I joined Outschool because I wanted to extend my creative approach to teaching beyond the traditional classroom. This platform allows me to share my passion for education with a wider audience, giving students a chance to learn in a flexible and supportive environment. I truly believe that each learner has unique strengths, and my goal is to nurture those strengths while making learning an engaging and enjoyable process. By creating a space where students can feel comfortable expressing themselves, I hope to inspire curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.
When I’m not mentoring, you’ll find me on a yoga mat, hiking trails, or making music. These pursuits fuel my creativity and keep me energized for my true passion: guiding others in recognizing their beautiful and unique potential!
I truly appreciate your interest in my classes. If you’d like to know more or have any questions, feel free to reach out. I’m looking forward to connecting with you and your learner soon!
Kind Wishes,
Ms. Donna
