Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
In this two-day class, learners learn a phonetic approach to reading. They will practice various targeted phonics skills, become aware of how sounds work in words, both vowels and consonants, and learn underlying principle skills that will help each learner become a fluent English reader. This course is designed to help learners develop fluent phonetic & writing skills.

Before a learner can fluently read print, they need to become aware of how sounds work in words. They must understand that words are made up of individual speech sounds, or phonemes. A learner's skill in phonological and phonemic awareness is a good predictor of later reading success or difficulty. This is why this course is designed to teach phonological and phonetic awareness, not just word calling.

In "Listen to Me Now: I Can Read & Write" A Phonetic Approach - Part 1, learners learn a phonetic approach to reading and debunk any fears the learner might have as the learner approaches unfamiliar words. Learners will review long and short vowel sounds, consonant sounds found in frequently used words, practice decoding, blending, reading & writing the new phonetic skills learned; write words, phrases, sentences and possibly short stories depending on the learner's skill ability.

Day 1- Assess long & short vowel sounds and sounds of main / frequent consonants
Phonetic Skills 1: Identify one consonant following a vowel, the vowel sound is short
Phonetic Skills 2: Identify two consonants following a vowel, the vowel sound is short
○ Learners will be introduced to Phonetics Skills 1 & 2 in this lesson, practice the skill and begin writing words, phrases and sentences using these two new phonics skill. Learners will be able to recite, identify the skill and give examples on their own of the new skill and practice reading an excerpt using the newly acquired skill.

Day 2- Phonetic Skills 3: Identify when a vowel stands alone with no consonants following it, the vowel sound is long
Phonetic Skills 4: Identify more than one vowel in a word, and one of those is an -e at the end of the word, that -e at the end of the word will be silent, making the first vowel in the word long
○ Learner will review Phonetic Skills 1 & 2 and be introduced to Phonetic Skills 3 & 4 in this session. The learner will practice the skills and begin writing words, phrases and sentences using these two new phonics skill. Learners will be able to recite, identify the skills, give examples on their own of the new skills and practice reading an excerpt or passage using the newly acquired skill independently.
○ Wrap Up: putting it all together

This class is appropriate for learners in First, Second, Third grade, and English Language Learners/ESL learners. Age is somewhat flexible. Learners should know the letters of the alphabet, have some knowledge of their sounds, and have basic knowledge of basic sight words [a, and, all, away, be, but, do, good, in, is, it, have, now, that, they, who, with, yes, etc.]. Learners should NOT worry if they don't know EVERY letter sound, short or long vowel sounds because, if you're just starting out, this class is ideal for beginners [emergent] and those looking to strengthen their reading skills [eager readers] and ESL students [English as a Second Language] because they will learn foundational skills to help become a fluent English reader, speaker and writer in these classes.

This class may be repeated. The more a learner practices the phonetic skills taught in "Listen to Me Now: I Can Read & Write" A Phonetic Approach - Part 1, the better understanding the learner will have of how our English language works, resulting in becoming a better, more fluent reader, writer and speller.

Additionally, "Listen to Me Now: I Can Read & Write" A Phonetic Approach, has Part 2 & 3 where different principle skills are taught, developing an even higher and better understanding of other phonetic skills, rounding out the learners knowledge. Also available is "I Can Read!" Series for Emergent & Eager Readers & ESL Learners" where learners practice several different phonetic skills and read entire books from the "I Can Read" Series, books and principles that have been taught in schools for several decades, all available for your learner. I am a retired public school Principal who has taught and written curriculum for grades K-12 in all subject areas. I have taught learners from grades K-12, Special needs learners, adults, ESL learners from several countries it seems for most of my life. Teaching children is what I love to do! And teaching learners of all ages to read and write is my passion. I personally am an avid reader and have been since I was a little girl hearing my Mom say, "Lights out in there. It's way past your bedtime" as I read with a flashlight under my covers. I love to work with children in all subject area [reading, writing, science, cooking to name a few] but teaching them to read and write in particular is probably my favorite. Seeing the "lights" come on as a learner "gets it" is what I love most and love being a part of that experience.

I am very happy to be teaching on the Outschool platform and look forward to my passion for reading, rubbing off on your learner.
