Starting out you will at least need a darning needle, craft scissors, and a hook. Look for a crochet kit, it will have all these items.  I would get the 6 mm hook, color doesn't matter, but I would not recommend the plastic hook. You will also need a skein of yarn. I prefer Red Heart brand, but any brand will do. Any color will do. Make sure the yarn is not a bulky yarn or overly think yarn.  On the yarn label you should see the word "medium" this is the best for beginners, in my opinion. I have attached a picture showing the yarn and needle, please note size and color in the picture may be different and doesn't really matter. This is all they should need for now.
