US Grade Kindergarten
Note: Summer 2024 Sections are now enrolling. This on-going course is designed as a complete kindergarten core curriculum class taught by a Master's level certified teacher with 25+ years experience teaching kindergarten. Learning targets follow the Common Core Curriculum standards for kindergarten. The course offers rigor, balanced with fun, and includes authentic/hands-on activities. Skills and concepts taught will prepare learners for first grade. Worksheets and printable materials are seldom used in class. Materials such as teacher written stories, whiteboards, writing tools/crayons/markers, playdough, trays of salt/flour, and manipulatives such as snap cubes or interlocking bricks are used frequently. The learning targets will include new skills and repetition. Opportunities will be provided regularly for students to apply skills. Learners will be encouraged to demonstrate understanding of the objectives by explaining their thinking and showing their work in authentic hands-on ways. The teacher will spiral up or down for each student as the week progresses and student individual needs are identified. Students will meet 4 days a week with the teacher and each other and a routine will be established inclusive of a welcome song, daily circle time to practice calendar skills, alphabet recognition and phonics sounds, sight words, tracking weather and place value. Students will then be involved in a daily interactive read aloud with stories and poems which are created by the teacher. This will develop literacy skills and comprehension strategies. Math skills are included in calendar time and build upon each other each day. Math skills are also integrated into the content areas to allow for practical application. The class will be structured as teacher facilitated and interactive. Learners will be engaged in games, discussions, songs and hands-on activities. My teaching style is relaxed and inclusive. I encourage learner participation and questions. The classroom is 'ours' not 'mine'. Learners will have many opportunities to interact with me and their classmates each day. After the daily routine meeting will be skill time. Each day the skill will focus on a different content area: Math is taught and practiced each day of class. Monday-literacy with teacher created stories and poems. Supply List
Each week you will be provided with a material list for the following week. Materials may not always be needed. Printouts are seldom used in this course. Typical materials such as writing surface and writing tools, picture books which the student has at home and they choose to bring to class, playdough and counters are needed. I keep materials simple and encourage learners to use what they have at home. When materials such as scissors or pipe cleaners are suggested it is recommended that an adult be present for supervision and safety.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
The teacher has created her own books and poems for use in class. When students use books at home they use their own copies. This protects copyright laws.
