* This class is set up as an ongoing class so it is a weekly drop-in course. Subscriptions to this class can start or stop at any time. It will never be cancelled due to low enrollment as I will teach to a single learner. This class offers instruction on recognizing the unique characteristics that define each genre of literature at the elementary level. Being able to identify the genre with which they are confronted allows readers to more readily determine the author's purpose and comprehend it. Instruction in both fiction subgenres and non-fiction subgenres will be given using an interactive read-aloud approach to illustrate examples of each. Group dialogue in response to teacher prompts as well as student printables will be incorporated. Printables will be posted in the classroom 48 hours before class every week. The expectation is that all learners will come prepared with them as they are essential to fully learning the material. I strive to keep my lessons structured, yet open to input from learners. Because I want to ensure that every student is able to participate, my maximum number of learners is only 5 students. Learners are encouraged to stay unmuted in this interactive class as long as there is no background noise. This provides for a more seamless conversation among the group. Please be aware that because dialogue is student-dependent, we may run longer than the listed timeframe on any given week. 05/27-05/31 Fiction Subgenre: Realistic Fiction 06/03-06/07 Fiction Subgenre: Adventure/Action 06/10-06/14 Fiction Subgenre: Historical Fiction 06/17-06/21 Non-fiction Subgenre: Informational 06/24-06/28 Fiction Subgenre: Fantasy 07/01-07/05 Fiction Subgenre: Mystery 07/08-07/12 Fiction Subgenre: Science Fiction 07/15-07/19 Fiction Subgenre: Tall Tales 07/22-07/26 Non-fiction Subgenre: Narrative non-fiction 07/29-08/02 NO CLASS 08/05-08/09 Fiction Subgenre: Fables 08/12-08/16 Non-fiction Subgenre: Biography 08/19-08/23 Fiction Subgenre: Fairytales 08/26-08/30 Fiction Subgenre: Poetry 09/02-09/06 Fiction Subgenre: Humor 09/09-09/13 Fiction Subgenre: "Why Stories This class ends

Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I am a certified teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching elementary students. I have found such joy over the years sharing my love of children's literature, teaching literacy skills, and sharing dialogue with children about books. I teach students about different genres of literature, reading non-fiction text, and I also teach a series of lessons about the keys to reading comprehension. The hundreds of children with whom I have worked over the years have taught me that children learn most effectively when they are captivated by a topic, a teacher, or an activity. Children crave engagement and my goal is to provide that in my lessons.
