Class Experience

This class is highly interactive, fast-paced, and a lot of fun for students who are eager to play! We will start out with a quick warm-up and tongue twister, then go right into the first rule of improv, "Yes, And." Each student will have their own time to "perform" individually and also with partners. We will do an individual character activity, followed by an interactive lesson about "genre acting," which is a fun and unique twist I like to put on a lot of my improv classes/clubs! Students will walk away from class with a basic understanding of improv acting, experience what it feels like to create their own characters on the spot, and a quick lesson on how to act in drama, comedy, horror, action/adventure, and musical scenes.
See breakdown below for more specifics:
1. Name & movement intros/tongue twisters
2. "Yes, And" demo and activity (practicing back & forth dialogue using the "yes, and" technique in improv)
3. Building a Character: students will try different movement activities with a specific character in mind, exploring how to use their bodies to portray specific characteristics. How would this character walk? How would this character react to a problem? Is this character happy/sad?
4. Genre Game: We will choose a scenario to act out, and explore how the same scene would be different in other genres (horror, comedy, musical, drama, action/adventure)
Learning Goals
Students will learn "the rule of yes," while playing games and interacting with each other throughout class. They will learn how to use their bodies and creative minds to act out specific characters and scenarios, and have fun putting these things into different genres.

Supply List
No materials needed, but we will be doing a lot of "on your feet" activities throughout class, so an open space where we can see students' full body movements (as opposed to sitting at a desk or table) will be super helpful and encouraged!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I am a "working actor" outside of class, and have lots of experience in commercials, auditioning for professional TV shows/films, and writing/producing my own scripts. I am also an actor for the Murder Mystery Company, which is an interactive-based improv troupe that performs murder mystery shows around the country. I have taught in camps and after school programs for years, and one of my campers' favorite classes were improv. They love just being in the moment, creating, making up scenarios, and interacting with others. I've seen improv & acting positively affect so many kids because it really builds confidence and listening skills. Acting is a great way to get their mind off of every day stresses, and I love seeing them be able to let go, be in the moment, and have fun! I've worked really hard to create games catered to online learning, and I'm always learning fun ways to teach along the way. As always, feel free to read my full bio and watch my video on my profile page. Hope to see ya in the classroom!
