Private Lessons: Acting & Improv, Social Skills, and Communication

In a 55 minute session, we will work on the learner's goals, whether it's practicing portraying emotions and thinking on the spot, becoming more confident in social situations, or learning how to act on-camera and prepare for auditions.

Homework
1 hour per week. I will usually provide suggestions on what to work on independently or for our next lesson. This may include practicing skills learned in real life situations, memorizing a scene or monologue, or a journaling assignment.
Assessment
I will provide feedback on "homework" during our next lesson, or through messaging. Students can feel free to message me through Outschool for further questions or advice.

Class Experience

These private lessons are catered to the learner and their goals. We will take a couple minutes at the start of the session to talk about what they are looking to accomplish, fears they may have holding them back, and anything else they want to include.

I often use improv and role-playing techniques to help with confidence-building and social skills, and we will always go at a pace the learner is comfortable with. I like to create a very low pressure, casual, and positive environment for my students.

Below is a general format:

1. Talk about Goals
2. Warm-up (depending on the goal of the session, warm-ups can include practicing lines in different emotions, interviewing each other about easy topics, or learning a couple tongue twisters)
3. First Activity (this would include a role playing a real life situation, reading and directing a scene for acting lessons, or practicing improv with "yes, and" techniques)
4. Talk About It ( I encourage learners to reflect and talk about their feelings along the way so that they can become aware of their tendencies and be consistent with their progress)
5. Second Activity (or continuing the first activity after feedback)

*Please keep in mind this is a very general format, and activities will depend on the learner's goals.
Learning Goals
Each student will have an individualized experience, since we are working 1:1. They will get personalized feedback and advice for acting skills, being on the spot, and social situations. They will also learn how to better take direction and self-reflect.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Indiana University
For theatre and communications, I double-majored in Journalism/Theatre & Drama at university, and have a day job as a medical actor that requires giving feedback to medical students. I've taught lots of theatre camps and after school classes, and regularly teach improv now online. Through my work with teaching and medical acting, I often encounter people who struggle with communication, empathy, or being on the spot. This is something I've loved exploring with people, and really see the benefits in their day-to-day lives.

I have lots of experience in commercials, auditioning for professional TV shows/films, and writing/producing my own scripts. I do have an "on-camera" agent and am always open to answering questions about the film industry. I first was a theatre actor before I did film, so I can work well with students who have that same background-- in teaching them how to transition from stage to on-camera acting. During COVID, I have "self-taped" auditions almost every week, and can teach students how to master that skill. While in Chicago, I've auditioned for movies, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med, and Chicago Fire, as well as various commercials.
