Story ideas, writing strategies, and tips and tricks are never in short supply in this class! You’ll never hear, “I don’t know what to write!” again. In this class, students will learn essential story elements and strategies to strengthen and sharpen their writing skills. Strategies learned in this class will benefit your writer for years to come.

Class Structure:
    📕 Welcome to class!
          ~ Introductions
📕 Supply check-in: Let’s ensure you have what you need to succeed!
~ Students must come to class prepared with two items — something to write with and something to write on.
If your student plans to type their story during the class, they should come prepared with an open Google Doc or another open word processor.
📕 What are we learning today?
~ Together, we will discuss the objectives for the class.
     📕 Discussion of class rules:
          ~ Have fun
          ~ Do your best
          ~ Ask questions
~ Be respectful and kind to yourself
     📕 Writing Prompts:
~ During this time, students will review writing prompts and select their writing topic.
     📕 Writing Time:
~ Students will have approx. 25-30 minutes to work on writing their stories. This time is largely controlled by your learner's comfort level with writing. I'm available 100% during this time to assist with the creative process.
~ It’s during this time in the class that I will scaffold my instruction to ensure that the student's individual learning goals are met, and learning opportunities are addressed properly.
     📕 Editing/Revising:
~ Will you read what you wrote? If so, let’s talk about how we can improve your story! We’ll use the ARMS & CUPS methods of editing and revising. As time allows, we will cover one or more of these topics to ensure growth as a writer.

Welcome! I assure you that you won’t find a more supportive and encouraging teacher. I want your learner to succeed in this class and will do everything to facilitate that. If you have questions, please reach out to me.

⭐️ Important Reminders / Outschool & Class Policies ⭐️

* Mute/learner removal reminder: There are times in class when “muting” all learners is necessary. If I plan to mute the class, I inform the class first. If a learner constantly calls out, is disrespectful, or purposefully causes a disruption, I must mute that learner. Under rare circumstances, I may remove a learner from the classroom due to unmanageable behavioral issues. If this occurs, I will reach out to the learner’s parents within 24 hours of the incident to discuss the next steps.

It is my goal to create a fun, interactive learning environment. I believe when students have fun, they learn the most. In addition, I love to learn and teach. Therefore, I strive to make each class as interactive and encouraging as possible. I appreciate your interest in my class, and I hope to see your learner in the classroom!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Frostburg State University
I have nearly a decade of teaching experience in various settings. For the past four years, I have been teaching writing exclusively here on Outschool. I've also taught in the brick-and-mortar setting. Writing is a topic that I am personally passionate about. While working in the brick-and-mortar school setting, I would frequently work 1:1 with special needs students to help them become better writers and accomplish the goals outlined in their IEPs.

My degrees/certifications are:
• Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education
• Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education

I also regularly participate in continuing education courses for teachers.
