Students must turn their videos on at the beginning of each class to verify their identity. No exceptions will be made. If you have questions about this policy or are concerned about technical trouble before entering the classroom, please reach out to Outschool Support. 📕 Supply check-in: Let’s ensure you have what you need to succeed! ~ Students must come to class prepared with two items — something to write with and something to write on. ~ If your student plans to type their story during the second part of the class, they should come prepared with an open Google Doc or another word processor. 📕 What are we learning today? ~ Class learning goals and outcomes will be discussed. 📕 Discussion of class rules: ~ Have fun ~ Do your best ~ Ask questions ~ Be respectful and kind to yourself and the other learners in our class. 📕 Writing Prompts: ~ Learners will each have a turn to read aloud one (or more) teacher-provided prompts to the class. 📕 Mini-Lesson: ~ Students will participate in our weekly mini-lesson. Examples of topics discussed include: ✏️ Editing & Revising ✏️ Awesome Endings ✏️ Brilliant Beginnings ✏️ Show, Don’t Tell ✏️ Interjections ✏️ Homophones & Commonly Misused Words ✏️ Grammar Rules ✏️ Comma Usage ✏️ Adding Details 📕 Writing Time: ~ Students will have approx. 20 minutes to work on writing their stories. During this time, students can expect to conference with the teacher. After our conference, students will return to their writing to apply the feedback they received to revise and expand upon their drafts. 📕 Share Time: ~ All interested students will have time to share what they have written during the class. 📕 Class Summary & Review: ~ Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the lesson, their writing, etc. 📕 See you next time! ~ After class (OPTIONAL): You may submit your student’s work to me via Outschool messenger. I will provide personalized feedback and encouragement to share with your learner. 📕 Class Overtime: I schedule my classes with 10 minutes of time between each of them. This way, if learners have questions, share time runs late, or if learners simply want more time to stay and write, I will keep class open for an additional 10 minutes. 🗒 A Note from Ms. Lindsay 🗒 A certain level of independence is required for this class. While I am here to help your learner succeed, it is essential to remember that this is a group course. Learners can expect that I will check in individually at least twice during the writing portion of the class. Every student will have the opportunity to share what they have written during the class that day. If time allows, I will allow students to read more, but we must be respectful of all learners and ensure each student has an opportunity to share their writing from that day. I assure you that you won’t find a more supportive and encouraging teacher. I want your learner to succeed in this class and will do everything to facilitate that. If you have questions, please reach out to me. ⭐️ Important Reminders / Outschool & Class Policies ⭐️ 📝 Mute/Learner Removal Policy: There are times in class when “muting” all learners is necessary. If I plan to mute the class, I inform the class first. If a learner consistently calls out, is disrespectful, or purposefully causes a disruption, I must mute that learner. Under rare circumstances, I may remove a learner from the classroom due to unmanageable behavioral issues. If this occurs, I will reach out to the learner’s parents within 24 hours of the incident to discuss the next steps. 📝 Class Refund Requests: Review Outschool’s happiness guarantee/refund policy using the link below. I will not issue refunds for missed classes as all classes are recorded. To respect learner privacy, class recordings are available upon request. https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/16379-outschool-s-happiness-guarantee-and-refunds 📝 Class Payment: Outschool will bill you each week that you are enrolled in an Ongoing Class, but you can pause or stop your subscription at any time. You will receive a full refund if you stop your subscription within 24 hours of payment, including initial sign-up. Once your first class meeting begins, you are no longer eligible for a full refund. Stopping your subscription after class begins or after the 24-hour period will stop any future charges, but will not result in a refund of your most recent payment. 📝 Missed Class/Class Transfer Policy: I'm always more than happy to accommodate schedule change requests. If you need to change, please submit a transfer request via the Outschool website, or you can send me a direct message with the details. Please include the class day, time, and timezone you are located in, so I'm sure to transfer your learner to the correct class. I am always happy to make the class recording available for you to watch at your convenience. 📝 Low Enrollment Policy: If a class has less than two learners, I will reach out 48-72 hours in advance to discuss next steps. Typically, I will go ahead and teach the section, at least for the first 3-4 meetings of a section, to give the class an opportunity to grow in the number of enrollments. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these policies, please feel free to reach out to me and let me know! I'm always here to help. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ creative writing, writing, English, paragraph, narrative, writing prompts
Learning Goals
Each week, students participate in a mini-lesson designed to teach them different strategies and techniques that will sharpen their writing skills. Learners will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned by writing independently in response to various prompts. This way, students learn and immediately apply different writing principles, piece by piece, as they develop their writing skills. Students will also develop and improve their public speaking skills as they share their work with the class.
