What's included

1 live meeting
1 in-class hours per week
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Regular, weekly reading assignments in advance of the class are required. These may consist of a chapter, a scholarly article, or another reading assignment. The assignment, plus requisite notes should take the student no longer than one hour. The student will be asked once per unit to conduct a battle or campaign analysis to demonstrate understanding of the terms, principles, and concepts discussed throughout the unit. A research assignment will be given, periodically to investigate (in-depth, breadth, and context) major aspects of Military History.
Assessment
Battle and Campaign analyses will be a good measure of the student's understanding of the class content and concepts. Research projects will further demonstrate the student's understanding and capacity for independent study.

Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
This is an On-Going Outschool class which focuses upon the student's declared interests in History and Geography. There are several approaches to this class which the student and parent should consider when making a request for a tutorial. Upon deciding which approach is best please allow a week or two for me to prepare a tailored class for your learner.

Approach #1: Military Strategic Theory: A thorough investigation into how military theory developed into military doctrine and practice from the earliest times to the present.

Approach #2: Military History 101: A detailed study of the evolution of warfare from Sumer to Afghanistan. This approach encompasses wars, battles, leaders, tactics, and weapons in a meaningful historical context.

Approach #3: Era or Epoch Study: An in-depth investigation of a specific era in Military History (i.e., Medieval or Revolutionary). This course would focus on the "depth, breadth, and context" (Sir Michael Howard) of a dynamic period of the student's choosing.

Approach #4: War Case Study: the causes, course of events, and consequences of a conflict using primary and secondary documents to gain a detailed understanding of every aspect of that conflict from beginning to end.

Approach #5: Campaign Analyses: This course would examine military campaigns in extraordinary detail through both campaign analyses and battle analyses from the beginning to the end of each (or a singular) campaign in Military History.

Approach #6: "In the mind of the commander" course of study: Not merely the biography of a Great Captain, but an elaborate investigation into the factors which influenced the commander's decision-making cycle throughout his career. In this course a deep reading of letters, journals, communiques and other primary sources will be required to unveil how and why this commander rose above all others to earn the title of a Great Captain of Military History.

Twice-a-week the student will interpret quotations, analyze primary sources, use secondary sources, compare historians' interpretations, analyze battle maps, use military principles as a tool of analysis, and assess military doctrine.

Assigned readings provide the context for the lesson and handwritten notes taken should be available for reference during the lesson.

The student is encouraged to send a message for clarification or questions between meeting times.
All course work should be uploaded via Outschool as text file (preferably MS Word).

I have been a Military History enthusiast for the past 40 years. From collecting (and reading) books, military scale models, table-top wargaming, role playing games, to studying and writing - this exciting topic has thoroughly captured my imagination. I presently hold a M.A. in Military History from American Military University and have taught a variety of History courses which include a great deal of Military History.
I am a certified (7-12) Social Studies teacher and have taught a variety of honors level courses (AS/A Level, GCSE, I.B. and A.P.) in both private and public schools over the past 30 years. Historical writing, source analysis, and exam preparation as well as an immersive approach to the study of history has made my classes both meaningful and enjoyable. My tutoring experience has spanned the entire 21st century with ACT, SAT, SSAT, ISEE, A.P. Histories, and Subject Tests.
