What's included
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will have practice assignments that go along with the week's recorded lesson. Some weeks will also have a lab component to help learners gain a better understanding of the week's topic.Assessment
Each week there will be practice for the learners to complete and at the end of the course, there will be an optional assessment for learners to review and test their knowledge.Grading
Grades will be offered by request.Class Experience
Welcome to your exciting journey into the world of chemistry! This second-semester chemistry course is designed to build on the knowledge and skill set developed in High School Chemistry: First Semester. This course will provide learners with a solid foundation of the fundamental principles of second-semester chemistry. Throughout this course, learners will explore a diverse range of topics, from understanding gas laws to unraveling the mysteries of nuclear chemistry. Each week will be comprised of one pre-recorded video along with challenges and practice opportunities Here's a sneak peek at what you'll be learning: Week 1 Gas Laws: Learners will explore the behavior and relationship of gases under diverse conditions including pressure, temperature, and volume. This week will include a lab to support the materials learned from the lesson and allow learners to gain a deeper understanding of the topic. Week 2- Solutions: Learners will gain an understanding of homogeneous mixtures of substances as well as explore solubility, concentration, and colligative properties. Week 3&4 Acids and Bases: Learners will explore the properties of acids and bases, acid-base reactions, and determining pH. Each week will include a lab to further explore the concepts of acids and bases. Week 5&6 Thermochemistry: Learners will gain an understanding of heat and energy related to chemical reactions. Learners will explore enthalpy, Hess’s law, and Calorimetery. Week 7- Electrochemistry: Learners will explore the relationship between chemical reactions and electricity as well as Oxidation-Reduction Reactions. Learners will gain an understanding of chemical reactions involving electron transfer between reactants. Understanding oxidation states, and identifying electron donors and acceptors. Involves galvanic cells, electrolysis, and their practical applications. Week 8-Nuclear Chemistry: Learners will explore atomic nuclei, nuclear reactions, and properties of radioactive elements. Learners will also explore radioactivity, nuclear decay, and applications in various scientific fields. This course is not only about gaining knowledge but also about developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deep appreciation for the world of chemistry. Through engaging pre-recorded videos, hands-on experiments, and practice done through Nearpod and Kahoot, Learners will embark on a rewarding learning journey that prepares them to uncover the wonders of chemistry and ignite their passion for scientific exploration!
