Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Welcome to Chemistry 101, where we’ll embark on an exciting journey through the basics of chemistry! Over five weeks, you’ll dive into new concepts each week, building on what you learned before in a way that’s both fun and approachable. Our goal is to make chemistry accessible and enjoyable for everyone, creating a supportive environment where you can thrive.

This introductory course is perfect for beginners or anyone needing a refresher. While a basic understanding of addition and subtraction is helpful, no prior chemistry knowledge is required. You’ll stay on track with engaging activities, essential questions, and practice problems designed to reinforce your learning and boost your confidence!

Learning Goals

Learners will be able to demonstrate mastery of the core principles of chemistry using the NGSS standard.

5 Lessons
over 5 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Atomic Models and Subatomic Particles
Learners will explore and learn about the different atomic models, how they have changed over the years, the parts of an atom, and how we can view that information by looking at the periodic table. They will have a provided note sheet to use during class and a challenge assignment to help strengthen their understanding of how to identify information about an atom from looking at the periodic table.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Periodic Table
Learners will explore more about the periodic table, how it is organized, and the elements by coloring in the different groups of elements on the periodic table. They will have a provided note sheet to use during class and a challenge assignment to help strengthen their understanding of the arrangement of the periodic table.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Chemical Bonds
Learners will gain an understanding of the different types of chemical bonds that form between atoms, why and how they form, and practice creating chemical bonds. They will have a provided note sheet to use during class and a challenge assignment to help strengthen their understanding of the types of bonds, when, and how they will form.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Writing Chemical Formulas and Naming Compounds
Learners will use the information learned about chemical bonds and the previous weeks to help understand how to write chemical formulas and name binary compounds. They will have a provided note sheet to use during class and a challenge assignment to help strengthen their understanding by practicing writing formulas and naming compounds.
