This course will explore the design and peculiarities of Greek drama. We will explore how and why the plays are constructed the way they are, and how this fits with the historical context and physical space of drama in ancient Greece. We will explore example pieces to explore themes, functions, and structure. This class is primarily a literature class, but we will be studying the literature within its historical context to help the student imagine and understand the original production, and how those restraints impacted Greek theatre. Week 1-Greek theatre construction and Oedipus Rex by Sophocles Week 2-Tragedy vs. Comedy and Medea by Euripides Week 3-Elements and innovations of Greek plays and The Birds by Aristophanes
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of the form and function of Greek drama.
