See also my related world literature courses and DBQ writing. This course will explore the world of Ancient Greece and Rome through primary documents and images. This course is interactive and discussion based. Students will be provided with prior reading assignments to prepare for in class discussion. We will discuss the development and characteristics of each of these civilizations, as well as key points in their history. Learners need no prior exposure to the Classical world to benefit from this course, although I would recommend my course on Ancient Civilizations and evaluating primary documents as useful. I enjoy teaching students how to do real history instead of simply memorizing facts, so we will actively engage with primary documents to help understand the historical circumstances we are discussing. Week 1-Early Greece/development Week 2-Classical Greece Week 3-Decline of Greek civilization and the Hellenistic age Week 4-Development of Rome and the Roman Republic Week 5-Roman Empire
Learning Goals
Students will understand the rise, characteristics, and fall of each of these classical civilizations.
