US Grade 6 - 7
While it is not necessary for your learner to have taken "Part 1" of this class, some background knowledge of Greek/Latin roots and the reason for studying them for vocabulary acquisition is recommended. Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes are the building blocks of our English language. Morphological awareness, or an individual's ability to decode and analyze the structure of words, not only aids in vocabulary acquisition but is also a critical factor in enabling the comprehension of text. In this class, students will be explicitly taught 50 common roots, prefixes, and suffixes in a spiral fashion in which the information builds upon itself each week and is also reviewed to ensure mastery. The main goal of this class will be to build both their passive vocabulary (words encountered during reading) as well as their active vocabulary (the words used confidently when speaking and writing). The students will create an interactive notebook with which to use as a study guide. Students will participate in meaningful activities and games each week in order to help with memory acquisition. Some of the games will be on sites like Kahoot! and Quizlet. I think that students are more likely to learn when they are actively engaged and having fun, so each class will be highly interactive! Finally, learners will be assigned a project to work on outside of class that will help to cement their knowledge for the roots presented in class. CLASS ONE: -Creation of personal learning goals. -Introduction of five new roots. -Explanation of scavenger hunt and final project -Game Time! CLASS TWO: -Divide and Conquer Vocabulary Words: Activation of learner background knowledge and bringing awareness to the everyday occurrence of certain roots -Introduction of five new roots -Game time! CLASS THREE: -Prefixes and more prefixes! -Wordplay in pairs -Game time! CLASS FOUR: -Discovering the figurative meaning of roots -Introduction of seven new roots that have both literal and figurative meanings -Let's create and answer more word riddles! -Game Time! CLASS FIVE: -Cognate Connections will be explored (using roots to understand the meaning of new words) -Introduction of seven new roots -Check-in on final projects -BINGO Game! CLASS SIX: -Introduction of seven new roots -Using our root knowledge to decode vocabulary words -Scavenger hunt -Game Time! CLASS SEVEN: -Multiple forms of bases and prefixes will be discussed and seven new roots introduced -1-2-3 Guess that origin game -GimKit CLASS EIGHT: -Presentation of final projects -Final Review Jeopardy!
Learning Goals
The learners will build their passive and active vocabulary through the in-depth study of Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. This will be accomplished through explicit instruction as well as active learning through hands-on activities and games.
