US Grade 2 - 5
This one-time, 50 minute class will start with an overview of where mythology fits among other types of folklore, like legends and folk tales. Then, we'll overview the iconic gods, goddesses, and stories of Ancient Greece and Rome. We'll touch on how the themes of these stories reflect daily life, culture, and religion. We'll use movie clips to compare modern renditions of famous Greek and Roman myths, and discuss the lasting influence of these myths in other fields, like astronomy. Finally, we'll answer the question: why are these stories from thousands of years ago still important today? Students are encouraged to engage and ask questions, but are welcome to passively absorb if they prefer. Optional Homework: Write a ~1 paragraph reflection to promote knowledge retention. Finally, I recommend checking out my Teacher Profile, especially my Teaching Philosophy section, to make sure this is a fit for your student. I also offer this class as a multi-week course on World Mythology: https://outschool.com/classes/world-mythology-in-popular-culture-greek-norse-japanese-egyptian-hinduism-bKUIqK1o and as a Self-Paced Class: https://outschool.com/classes/mythology-in-popular-culture-greek-norse-japanese-and-egyptian-btSI90jn#usu529M6QA if your student prefers one of those methods of instruction.
