Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Calling all storm watchers! If you find tornadoes interesting, this class is for you!

We will begin by looking at a tornado and sharing what we already know about them. Learners will also be able to share questions that they hope will be answering in class. In the slide presentation, learners will discover what a tornado is, how they happen, and when they are most likely to occur. Learners will then describe tornadoes and will be encouraged to use vocabulary that they have learned and adjectives that they know. We will then explore where tornadoes occur. Learners will be introduced to the Enhanced Fujita Scale and how tornadoes are categorized. We will then discuss the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning and go over safety procedures so that learners know what to do in case of a tornado. The slide show will conclude with some fun facts and learners will be able to share what they learned as well as some questions that they still have.

The fun does not end there! Learners will be invited to participate in a Jeopardy style game and win some play money!

After class, you will be given an optional science project to do at home where you make a tornado in a jar. This would be a fun family activity, and you can make a plan for what to do in case of a tornado.

I believe in letting learners have a voice in class and I welcome them to share their thinking with me and the other learners. I welcome questions!
