Exciting Earth Science of the Solar System- Geology, Atmosphere, Oceans and Exploration

This class takes a quick tour of the Solar System & explores what the different planets are made of. We particularly look at how the Earth was formed and the Earth Science systems we have discovered on other planets and their moons.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS INTRO ▬▬▬▬▬
Welcome to the "Exciting Earth Science" series, which focuses on some of the most dramatic physical forces on Earth, with the aim of making learning fun and exhilarating. I think making learning enjoyable and bringing science to life is the best way to get kids engaged and learning without realising it. No previous experience necessary.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS SUMMARY ▬▬▬▬▬
In this class we focus on how the Earth and Solar System was formed and how Earth differs from other planets. We'll look at why there may be life on Earth but not on Mars anymore but why we think there may have been life on Mars in the past. We'll then look at some of the most interesting geology that scientists have been discovering on other planets. This will be an exciting whirl wind adventure around the Solar System stopping off to look at some amazing rock formations on the way and learning why you and the Earth are both literally made of star dust.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS STYLE ▬▬▬▬▬
I use PowerPoint presentations for all my classes, so I can mix text and multimedia and make the class more interesting. This class will be run using an "intro-discussion-repeat" format. This means I will take a few minutes to introduce a topic, using images or videos wherever appropriate in order to bring the subject alive. Then we will pause to take questions and make sure everyone is keeping up. Then we'll move on to the next exciting sub-topic and supporting material, and then pause for questions after that one too. This means that you can enjoy the class however you like. Speak up and get involved and ask questions, or just listen and enjoy with no pressure. If you like this class then you check out my full "Earth Science" courses, with subjects cherry picked to choose the most interesting, accessible and relevant Earth Science subjects for kids, so they learn to enjoy exploring the world around them.

▬▬▬▬▬▬ LINKED CLASS ▬▬▬▬▬
This class can be taken on its own, but is best understood along with my other "Exciting Earth Science" classes on:
1) Exciting Earth Science: Plate Tectonics, Continent Smashing & Metamorphic Rocks
2) Exciting Earth Science: Sedimentary Rock Layers, Petrified Animals & Drowned Forests
Please see my other class listings for more lessons in the School of Hard Rocks!
Learning Goals
To discover and learn without realising it, because you are having fun! By the end of this course students will understand how the Solar System formed and why the Earth is different to other planets. They will also know about the main geological features on other planets and their moons.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class will briefly explore the end of the Earth in 4 billion years and although I will point out this will not affect the student or anyone they know, it may be distressing for more sensitive students. This class used PowerPoint presentations including some video snippets. No other 3rd party resources are used.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
